TERRIFIC DICTIONARY OF UNDERWORLD CANT

Review of Third Edition, 1963:

This isn't fictional "thieve's cant" as used in some role-playing games, this is the real deal! Thousands of terms used by the British and American underworld are carefully explained and, in some cases, early literary references are also noted.

A few examples of this strange dialect include: "eternity box," a coffin; "Mahometan gruel," for coffee (because it was introduced from Muslim Turkey); "one of us" or "one of my cousins" was used for a harlot; "quill driver," a scribe or hackney writer; "Friday face," a dismal countenace (because Fridays were fast days in The Roman Church); "goloshes" comes from "Goliath's shoes," so-called because these outer shoes are very large; "Bo-Peep," one who sometimes hides and sometimes shows himself in public. There are *thousands* of such cool usages in this book.

I have seen limited lists of thieve's cant on various web sites, but many of them crib from some edition or other of this book. Barnes & Noble should *definitely* release a new edition of this as a paperback!

Deep nuanced characters, skillful suspense, and hot steamy sex!!!

Oh wow! This is one hot story! Jae Jordon knows how to create deep nuanced characters, skillfully build suspense, and write very steamy sex! I'm on pins and needles waiting for the next installment...

Arden Goodman is a high-functioning sociopath... or is he? He lives his life in a protected bubble of sex and success. Then, everything changes when he receives word that his grandmother left him an inheritance. But what intrigues Arden the most is the mysterious Miles Snow. I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say things heat up quite a bit. I can't wait for the next installment...

Hot and steamy romance that kept me reading

Loved this story. I have been following this author right from the start and I think this is the best yet.

The characters really grabbed me. I was unsure about Arden to start with, but he grew me until I was rooting for all of them. I liked the way we saw him move and grow. And the pieces of sweetness he let us see every so often. His connection with Bill really twanged at my heart and I loved the dialogue between them.

There's some great flow to the words and it's easy to read. I liked the story line and some of the twists and turns that happened with Lucien. It kept me guessing until the end.

The sex scenes were really well written, hot and steamy, great imagery!! Oh yeah! :)

I am greatly looking forward to the next book from this author. I have a funny feeling there's going to be some interesting twists. Excellent all round. Thanks so much. I would highly recommend this book.

This is an author I will be following, a great read.

Gay Romance done very well!
Hot sex, humour, an intelligent plot, and characters that you come to like very much. It is delightful how the main character, the outrageous Arden, grows over the course of the book, and Bill is a really cool guy.
This is a fast paced book, with a lot of twists as one thing after another is thrown in Arden’s path. A very exciting and sexy book with lost of suspense!
Lost Gold is a good length so you really get to know the characters, and the ending is satisfying, even though there is a cliffhanger.
This is an author I will be following, a great read.

Best Style Book of the Year!

This book is fantastic! It's personal, visually rich and emotionally satisfying. The author, Stacy London, takes nine women of different ages, sizes and ethnicities and radically transforms their appearances. However, they don't just dress better; they all seem to glow - as if they'd discovered something amazing about themselves.

The most striking transformation is that of a 57-year-old executive from Silicon Valley who looks like a mature tech nerd. Initially, she is wearing mom jeans, a saggy cardigan and has a platinum mullet. By the end of her chapter, though, she is drop-dead gorgeous! She looks so chic in a velvet suit, bold jewelry and a modern short haircut. (She also looks about forty pounds lighter just by dressing differently.)

The author works with all different clothing budgets, too. The Silicon Valley womn is steered toward designer suits while in the 19-year-old UT student's makeover shot, she's wearing straight-leg jeans, a fitted blazer and edgy boots. There's also a plus-size African American woman who goes from frumpy to chic. Then, a breast cancer survivor has a whole different set of specific body issues, so she comes to look sexy, feminine and comfortable. There's also a tiny (4'11") 26-year-old who goes from wispy and faded to having a real presence, a zing; her hair color also changes to a deeper, richer tone which really brings out her facial features.

One chapter transforms a plus-size 39-year-old who is trapped in Mommy Syndrome - subsuming herself in her family - and dressing only in black. The author pulls her from her black clothing doldrums into a tailored career mom look. Another participant has issues with her extreme height. She's 5'11" and curvy, yet she almost fades into her "before" photo background. She absolutely comes alive with fitted, colorful clothing and a good haircut. Then, there's the Missouri redhead who also retreats into all black. The author styled her, so her delicate features shined. Finally, there's a cute 48-year-old divorcee who is ready to jump back into the dating pool, but first must overcome her addiction to blah-black and wrap herself in colors that really flatter her and make her look about fifteen years younger.

While the tone of this book is similar to Stacy London's approach on her TV show, "What Not to Wear," this book adds something more. There's a gentleness and a depth. Stacy shares her own early struggles with psoriasis, a visible chronic skin condition, which makes it easy to understand how she oozes empathy for so many other women and their struggles with self-perception and style. This book feels luxurious; the pages are glossy, the pictures abound, there's so much depth and careful analysis that one can reread at will so as to understand the approach to each style situation. The actual layout - fonts, insets - are so visually pleasing, too.
This is a must-have book for any woman who wants to be true to herself and her style!

Everything you love about Stacy London and then some

At 25, I've been shifting my style to crossover more between home and the office - I like to think of my style as "polished casual" but I was feeling a little lost in terms of finding things that flatter my shape while still being stylish and not busting my budget. I have watched WNTW for years and love it so I didn't hesitate in buying Stacy's book. What surprised me most about this was the insight Stacy gave into her own style journey and life. She shares some very personal things here and I really enjoyed learning more about her back story. You'll find everything you love about Stacy in this book and then some. The writing style is fun and authentic and there are great visuals to go along with each story. While I couldn't relate to each and every woman in the book, I did find several I really identified with and picked up some great tid bits from the other. This is a book I'll always keep around to go back to when I'm feeling lost style wise. A great purchase!

Great book, great tips, great insight

I have always been a fan of WNTW, and when I saw Stacy talking about this book on Anderson Cooper, I ordered it right away. The book covers the style and fit problems of a variety of women - all different ages, shapes, and sizes - and includes some little bits of info about Stacy's own life. It's easy for a skinny woman to tell a fat woman what she looks good in, but the advice becomes 100x more valuable once you find out that skinny woman once WAS a fat girl, and knows the fit issues you're facing.

In 1809 the world's undisputed military genius―Napoleon Bonaparte―confronted his implacable continental foe, the Hapsburg Empire. During the Vienna campaign of that year, Napoleon suffered his first defeat since becoming Emperor, but rebounded to win Wagram, a battle of unprecedented lethality. Referring to the strategic importance of the battles he fought, Napoleon reflected: My power is dependent on my glory, and my glory on my victories. My power would fall if I did not base it on still more glory and still more victories. Conquest made me what I am; conquest alone can keep me there. Even in the midst of a life and death campaign struggle against Austria, Napoleon continued to make nearly every decision of state on a daily basis. During his bath, while being shaved, when eating his meals, aides presented petitions and requests for his tireless attention: a second lieutenant asks to retain his French citizenship while serving in the Dutch army? Granted. Emperor Alexander I of Russia asks that an English prisoner of war who is a relative of his personal surgeon be released? Granted. If genius lies in the attention to detail, here was genius at work.

The sun rose on April 24, 1809, to illuminate a continent at war. From Poland to Spain, some 600,000 soldiers awakened to duty. Nowhere was the concentration of forces greater than in the Danube Valley where Napoleon had determined to launch his blow against the Austrian Generalissimus, Erzherzog (Archduke) Karl. If Karl triumphed, most of Europe stood poised to pounce. Napoleon and the French Empire would be attacked from all quarters. If Karl failed, all Europe―except England and perhaps Portugal and Spain―would make whatever accommodations were necessary to survive under Napoleonic hegemony. The ensuing campaign led to Napoleon's first defeat at Aspern-Essling. So, at the end of May, Napoleon sat with his battered army at the end of a long and imperiled line of communications while Europe erupted around him. Yet, at the moment of supreme crisis, Napoleon displayed his formidable talents and prepared a masterful counterstroke. French and Austrian alike suffered horrific losses at Wagram, but at battle's end, Napoleon's commanding presence produced a French triumph. One of the better books on Napoleonic battles

I found 'Napoleon Conquers Austria' to be a well researched and written book covering the 1809 campaign for Vienna. The author presented the campaign in such a fluid style that I lost track of time whilst reading the book. His account of the Battle of Wagram was excellent and there was 13 maps to assist the reader to follow the action. I think that the maps could have been better presented but they were sufficient, the illustrations (19) were interesting with some recent photos of the battlefields. Overall this was an easy to read account of this famous campaign and it was an enjoyable journey to take. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Napoleonic history.

Fun to read

How it is I do not know but the majority, vast majority, of books on this exciting period put me to sleep. Not Mr. Arnold. He has a fluid style which manages to entertain as well as inform. Why not 5 stars? The maps are crude and the Order of Battle does not include number of effectives present per regiment.

Get a good sense of what competitive graduate programs are looking for in applicant essays

Perfect standardized test scores and grades are not enough to gain entrance to the most selective colleges. Due to grade inflation and test prepping, quantitative perfection is becoming commonplace. To be successful, you must also show the school what kind of person you are. This is where the admissions essays come in.

Colleges require application essays to get a sense of who you are as a person, and what you may contribute to the school’s student body. Are you a leader? Do you have an interesting background? Are you able, and willing, to make a contribution to the intellectual life of the college?

While the undergraduate essay is the focus of many books, the graduate school essay is just as, if not more, important to your acceptance into graduate level programs. Colleen Reding has helped to fill that gap with her new book Grad’s Guide to Graduate Admissions Essays, published by Prufrock Press. This collection of essays provides grad school applicants with models of successful medical school personal statements as well as successful essays from law school, business school and general graduate school students, all of whom attended Georgetown with Ms. Reding for their undergraduate degrees. These essays go beyond the standard “I have always wanted to be a lawyer” and “I really just want to help people,” instead weaving personal experiences into the story of why they are the ideal candidate for admission. Readers will get a good sense of what competitive graduate programs are looking for in applicant essays, and models they can use when drafting their own. Grad’s Guide to Graduate Admissions Essays is a gem among other graduate admissions books. Not only do these essays serve as exemplary models written by actual graduate students accepted to some of the world’s most prestigious and selective graduate programs, but Ms. Reding’s honest comments and insightful tips, along with the “Writer’s Words of Wisdom” tidbits, will help any prospective student through the daunting process of graduate admissions. I highly recommend for anyone considering applying to grad school as it has been an especially helpful tool for me.

Exactly what I was looking for. Usually these guidebooks are full of editorial "gab" from the authors, but this one gets straight to the point. By page 3 you are reading the first example essay... and from there, it surprisingly becomes a page-turner... one interesting example after another. Money well spent. Roland Proesch was born in 1960 in Kiel. He studied communication technology in Hamburg at the University of the German Army. Since 1977 he is a licensed radio amateur which has enabled him to pursue one of his most profound interests, namely all types of digital communication. He works in the field of all different kinds of radio monitoring, electronic warfare and satellite communication for over 25 years.

Must have for professionals in the field

I've learned about this book when I worked on my master's thesis, looking for suitable literature. I've been also working in the field of radio monitoring for almost ten years. This book contains all the information one can possibly need for his professional carrier, university studies or his free time activities. The book itself is divided into several parts, describing necessary theoretical basics of waveform types, transmission basics (including channel coding, data formats etc.) and most important of all - description of huge amount of VHF/UHF modes. Each part of the book is written in a very comprehensible way, with adequate amount of necessary math if needed, and is focused on practical applications. You will get all the necessary information about radio monitoring in VHF/UHF band in one neat package. I'd also recommend other two books, written by this author for complete guide in the field of radio monitoring.

very useful and informative book , its very logical book and is good for average student,it carries design of PV plant from initial up to commissioning, since suitable for industrial stream, as mine opinion I would suggest go for it.
