Bass Scales

Good reference guide for beginner or intermediate bass players. If nothing else it's a good excercise guide. I'm sure if you've been playing bass your whole life it might seem too basic, but it certainly gives a person some new scales to mess around with.

I am a beginner bass player and I use this book to practice my scales for 10-15 minutes every time I practice. It comes in handy when I'm jamming out and I need a quick look at what key to play in.

Don't buy

I have the Scales book for guitar so I bought this for my Bass education. I was surprised to find that the tab notation excluded the "G" string notes or high string notes of the four strings:GDAE in the tablature diagrams. It is shown in the fingerboard diagrams of all scales and the musical notation above the tablature diagrams, but not on the tablature measures. Also one page, number: 59 and 60 was inserted into the book upside down. This required dissassembling the plastic spiral spine from half of the book to re-insert the page back into the correct orientation. I will have to notate all 168 pages of all of the 1680 scale measures to add the missing tab notes, if I want to have a finished tablature edition. Since this was printed and manufactured in CHINA, I'm not surprised about it. Don't buy this as for a gift. It is not quality. I also note that the guitarist book has the same number of pages and is thicker because they used a heavier stock of paper at the time of that printing.

Besonders hervorzuheben: Der Ansatz, die OC nicht nach Stoffklassen "abzuarbeiten", sondern immer wieder zu betonen, wie alles miteinander zusammenhängt. Auf diese Weise werden "klassische OC" und "der Brückner" schön zu einer Einheit verwoben.

Straightforward guide to becoming a better mathematician

Many kids grow up in fear of or hating math for several reasons. Everyone learns differently and teachers never really took the time to explain problems in context as this book does. It seems to go about it as an ABCs of math just as in order to read well, you have to have a solid base foundation of grammar, sentence structure, etc before you can really enjoy what you're reading.

The book is very straightforward particularly in geometry and algebra, which is the main math focus on SSATs. I wish I had this book when I was younger and maybe I would have enjoyed all math instead of despising it (except in science and music- that I somehow got and enjoyed immensely). I'm going to make a note of this book to use when my kids need it.

Necessary primer for the challenging math section of the SSAT.

Math isn't easy for everyone, and the SSAT Math section had my grandchild worried. This book provided both useful definitions as well as excellent study questions and solutions. The math section of the SSAT focuses heavily on arithmetic, elementary algebra and geometry skills. But a student must also be able to use more than memorization tactics. Through this book my grandchild was challenged to manipulate theories and formulas to solve problems and real-world applications to problems like those in the SSAT. Happy this book helped my youngster do well on the SSAT.

The Only Math Resource You'll Need

As someone who took a number of math courses in high school and college (geometry, Trig, Calc I and II, Statistics, etc.), I can confidently say that this is one of the best math resources I've come across. I only wish I'd had something like this when I was prepping for exams, but it will greatly help my niece. Rather than a bulky book with more practice problems than you can ever make your way through, this book provides explanations and succinct practice to help you master the most important concepts. I've you can master this material, you'll nail the test.

A Bit of History with Healing

The book is small but informative. The diagrams were adequate to get the idea of the placements and the history lesson layed a good foundational background to understand the how's and why's this technique works. I tried some hand placements in my meditations and did feel after only a few days that things were happening. Removing toxins, balancing the interior centers, etc. I did purchase another Mudras book that I found slightly more helpful as i didn't need or want to get as much history as this book provided.

The information I was looking for about the neuro-physilogical actions of mudras and how to practice them was all here. Thank you. I do not agree with some of the author's other philosophy but my culture is different and his philosophy will not interfere with my mudra practice which is proceeding.

The Importance of Nalanda to Buddhism cannot be overestimated

I have visited Nalanda several times over the last 30 years and seen ongoing archaeological work, albeit slowly, because of the sheer size of Nalanda Buddhist University and the universal lack of funding for this sort of work. For at least 600 years, thousands of students studied mathematics, medicine, logic, literature, linguistics not to speak of Buddhism. A foreign student in the 7th century reported 1510 teachers at the university. Mahayana Buddhism took shape here under such scholars as Chandrakirti, Nagarjuna, Naropa, Dinnaga, Dharmakirti and Tantric Buddhism under Padmasambhava. Chinese monks such as Xuangzang studied here and returned with knowledge and manuscripts to China. The library at Nalanda is estimated to have held hundreds of thousands of texts. Some sutras exist today because they were returned in Sanskrit to China, translated into Chinese, later lost in Sanskrit and then translated back from Chinese. Certainly Nalanda is the source of the Mahayana Buddhism of China.

The end of the useful life of the University and Monastery in the 13th century at the hands of invaders is secure. I have a photo of a friend with the palm of his hand near the base of wall cradling a few grains of burned rice. However, while it coincides with the vanishing of Buddhism in India, the cause of the two is not the same and is hotly debated.

Nalanda is located near the ancient city of Rajgrih, now modern Rajgir. It is the location of Vulture Peak where the Buddha meditated frequently and the “Bamboo Grove” the first “forest monastery” donated by King Bimbasara for the Buddha and his followers to pass the rainy season.

I was too harsh when I first reviewed this textbook

I don't know why Amazon does not have all the Yookoso 3rd edition book reviews linked. The online student center for this book is free now. You do not need the card from the book. Feel free to buy used you wont miss out on anything.

I first reviewed this book and gave it one star. After using this book in my Japanese class at my local community college for the past three months I decided to delete my review and rewrite a new one. The Yookoso textbook has a couple flaws but a lot of upsides as well.

The version of romaji used in this textbook is not standard. However, it is only used through chapter one. I personally think the Revised Hepburn of romaji is the best, I am guessing the author did not want to confuse students with how long vowels work so he chose to use "oo" instead of "ou" and "ee" instead of "ei". There are also english spelling mistakes throughout the book. So far I haven't encountered any japanese mistakes. However, I honestly have to say this is the best Japanese textbook I have used.

There are a few points you need to keep in mind when using this textbook.

1. Do not try to learn every thing in the getting started section. I can not stress this enough. The getting started section is there to give you something to do while learning the Japanese kana system. During the getting started section learn the kana system, numbers, and how to conjugate verbs. Try to learn as much vocabulary as you can but if you can't remember everything don't worry about it (70% is good). Most of it shows up again in the later chapters.

2. Yookoso likes to throw in a lot of extra kanji examples. Do not try to learn every kanji this book uses in each chapter. Learn all the kanji that the book has in the "Learn these kanji" sections. If you can learn some more that's fantastic. However, they are only there to give you more exposure to the kanji.

3. This textbook is not something you can blow through in a short amount of time. It is very hard. My community college uses this textbook for JPN 101 and JPN 102. Each class is 5 credit hours and we only cover Getting started and chapters 1 - 3 in JPN 101.

4. Do the activities in the textbook. We do about 70% of them in class and they really help. Find someone who is interested in Japanese if you can and do them together.

5. Buy the accompanying workbook. If you're using this book as a self study tool than a good rule to follow would be to do about 70% of the getting started section and 90% of each chapter section.

6. Get a spaced repetition flashcard program for review.

I really hope this helps. If you're a dedicated student this textbook will be a fantastic tool for you.

I prefer the Genki series

I took Japanese 1 using the Genki series, which I found to be much more comprehensive and easy to study from, with quick references to the lesson content in each chapter introduction, and the kanji learned in the corresponding sections in the back pages.

I'm now in Japanese 2, and we're using Yookoso. Yookoso isn't nearly as nicely laid out, and does not work well for studying from. The workbook is actually necessary in order to get a good study session out of the series.
