An Excellent Reference for Airline Managers and Students

I found this book to be among the best written about the airline industry. It is clear and straight-forward. It is packed with excellent notes and references for further study. This incredible achievement must be given to Paul Dempsey and Laurence Gesell for their outstanding efforts in delivering the most relevant business strategies for successful airlines into the next century.
I must strongly disagree with the crude and unsophisticated review given by another reviewer here.
This book delivered far beyond my expectations. GET IT!

A commendable introduction to the airline industry

This is the first academic book on the airline industry that I read and I still consider it the most readable one. However, as other reviewers have correctly pointed out, the book's title is blatantly misleading: This is by no means a manual delineating airline strategies for the 21st century but rather a thorough introduction to the airline industry and to the U.S. airline industry in particular. Apart from the odd subtitle, though, the book does live up to the expectations by brilliantly explaining the basics of airline management, and some chapters - especially the ones on airline economics, planning and price - are written so well and are so easy to understand that I would like to recommend Mr Dempsey and Mr Gesell's work to any student aiming to make himself familiar with the peculiarities of the airline industry.
Still, there are two minor omissions in this book that deserve to be noted. Firstly, the book having been published in 1997 only scarce mention is being made of the internet's role as a competitive tool used to enhance direct distribution within the industry; considering that nowadays more and more airlines are relying on internet technology in order to contain their operating costs, this is a point that truly needs to be updated. Secondly - and as has already been pointed out - the book's industry analysis focusses on the situation in the U.S., thus for the most part leaving aside the European and Asian markets where the airline industry tends to be heavily regulated and where the challenges airline managers are up against can be very different from the ones in the U.S.
All in all, however, this book offers a detailed and surprisingly readable introduction to the airline industry, and anybody who as yet has not read anything on the subject will not be disappointed in choosing the work by Mr Dempsey and Mr Gesell.

A Must For Any Aviation Professional!

This book went into great detail regarding the economics, finance, and other managerial perspectives of the airline industry. Included were several helpful tables, graphs and statistics. This book complemented an airline operations course I recently completed at college, within an aviation management program. This book serves as a great reference and will not collect dust on my shelf! Dempsey exhibits remarkable expertise throughout the chapters in this book. Anyone planning on going into any kind of aviation career should read this to remain knowledgeable of current situations within the airline industry. Overall, this has been the best aviation textbook I've read throughout my undergraduate training.

Masterful, Inspirational, and a great reference

Over 900 pages filled with masterful sketches, doodles, and completed illustrations with vibrant color and detail. This publication is full of inspiration and entertainment. I love that I can study his drawings and use this book as a drawing reference for anatomy and mechanical problems. Each new page is a random surprise. One page might have several little random sketches and then the next page might have a colored and detailed comic story that might go on for a few pages. Kim Jung Gi's level of discipline is astounding. This book rocks.

Inspirational stuff, albeit it's not a very large sketch book. I think 8x6, so it's handy if you're wanting to hit the johns, or are on the go -- and want something awesome to look at. If sketchbooks done by the great masters of yore where readily available as they are today, there would surely be more artists, and eventually masters -- trying to imitate them today, and the world would be a better place. We live in a time where such convenience is true. And many will be inspired, hone their craft, and hopefully become masters of their own -- through the works of this book. Kim Jung Gi's phenomenal rendering of his world, and his understanding of objects in countless compositions makes him really the next artist in line to wield the torch that's been passed on from Moebius. In other words get it, even if you're not an artist -- but just a fan of being overwhelmed with great drawings and stuff. Plus it comes with a nifty poster. Nifty poster+good stuff= profit in the johns.

About the Author
Ever since backpacking around the Greek Islands as a student, Duncan has been fascinated by the Mediterranean and its apparently idyllic lifestyle. In an attempt to live it himself, he gave up a stuttering career in corporate journalism and moved to southern Italy in 1997. Two years later he transferred north to Rome, where he lives with his Italian wife and two young kids. These days Duncan spends much of his time running up and down the Italian peninsula, writing for Lonely Planet, but he's still drawn to the south, and heads to the Ionian Coast every summer to test the beaches and enjoy the superb Puglian food.

An excellent guide, with plenty of photos, and informative narratives on restaraurants, etc.

ROME by Garwood and Hole is a 367-page guidebook from the LONELY PLANET series. The book is printed on dull paper, not glossy paper. There are plenty of decent-sized photographs, most of them 1/3 page size. The rear cover contains a multi-colored fold-out map (gray, green, red, purple, blue, black). The map shows Rome's downtown area, and one can easily detect sites of interest, such as the star-shaped grounds of CASTEL SANT ANGELO, PIAZZA NAVONA, PANTHEON, CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS, COLOSSEUM, BASILICA DEI SANTI APOSTOLI, and SPANISH STEPS. The map shows the location of many piazzas, chiesas (Italian for church), basilicas, and museos. The flip side of the map shows metro lines that lead from the suburbs to central Rome.

The guidebook has nine chapters (pages 56-218): (1) Ancient Rome; (2) CENTRO STORICO; (3) TRIDENTE, TREVI & QUIRINALE; (4) MONTI, ESQUILINO, & SAN LORENZO; (5) SAN GIOVANNI to TESTACCIO; (6) Southern Rome; (7) TRASTEVERE & GIANICOLO; (8) Vatican City; and (9) VILLA BORHESE & Northern Rome. Rather than jump immediately into detailed topics, this guidebook gently introduces the reader to the subject of Rome by way of several introductory sections (pages 1-55), with titles such as, Rome's Top 13; What's New; Need to Know; Top Itineraries; If You Like; Month By Month; With Kids; Eating; Drinking and Night Life; Entertainment; and Shopping.

A small map on page 3 provides a "big picture" of the organization of Rome, and we learn that the districts of Rome are called, CENTRO STORICA (the subject of the large fold-out map); Vatican City; Villa Borghese and northern Rome; Tridente; Ancient Rome; Monti; San Giovanni; and Southern Rome.

Regarding the photographs, we see ancient Colosseum (a time-exposure done at night) (page 6); Palatino (made of tan-colored brick) (pae 7); Museo e Galleria Borghese (a symmetrical white building housing works by Canova, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Titian), Pantheon (interior photo of a huge dome with dozens of tourists milling about under the dome); St. Peter's Basilica (resembles Grand Central Station in New York City, except without nervous New Yorkers running to catch their train) (page 10); and a half-dozen other photos showing Capitoline Museums (the world's oldest museum) (page 12); Roman Forum (page 13); a photo of one of Rome's piazzas; Viterbo (a former city center in medieval times); and another piazza (page 14). Later on in the book, we see sculptures of philosophers (page 25), St.Peter's Basilica (page 29); another photo of Colosseum (page 58); another photo of Palatino, showing a crumbling wall that reeals the interior of a dome within the crumbled building (page 60); another photo of Pantheon, where the facade of an ancient building reads: MAGRIPPAIFCOSTERTIVM (page 75).

Further regarding the photographs, we see a large photo of a sculpture of a horse residing in a pond, and a sculpture of a map with a snake twisted about his leg (pages 84-85); and Spanish Steps (at the head of the steps is a building with two towers, each tower capped with a blue dome) (page 105); photo of interior of Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli, with its multi-colored dome and multi-colored walls (page 130); Appian Way (cobblestone street built in 312 BC) (page 160); Roman Catacombs (subterranean burial site) (pages 162-163); ceiling of Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere (the ceiling has compartments shaped in octagons, plus-signs, L-shaped arrows, and the letter B) (page 171)., St.Peter's Basilica at night, showing a football-shaped dome with an illuminated crown on top of the dome (page 184), interior of Vatican Museum, showing display of sculptures of horses and other animals, and of human figures (page 189), and last but not least, five photographs of the Sistine Chapel (pages 195-199). Also shown, are photos of works by Bernini, Canova, Carravaggio, and Titian, at Musee e Galleria Borghese (pages 210-211). Later on in this book, we see photos of the interior of Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, showing a wall with an ornate relief sculpture flanking a large sculpture of a priest (page 285). There are also a couple of photographs of modern buildings (pages 286-287).

EXAMPLE OF ANECDOTES IN THE TEXT. Regarding the text, we read (page 79) about Piazza Pasquino, which is often called the "talking statue," because of the fact that, "in the 16th century, when dissent was forbidden, a tailor named Pasquino began sticking notes to the statue with satirical versus lampooning the church and aristocracy. Others joined in and soon there were talking stones all over town." As one can see, this guidebook contains intriguing and relevant anecdotes, which make the book as a whole, a lively read.

RESTAURANTS. In view of the fact that Rome was the center of the power and culture of the Western world, for so long, it is no surprise that this guidebook contains tons of information about palaces, museums, churches, and such, as well as information on the people who held administrative positions. But, as with all guidebooks, there is also info on restaurants, hotels, and transportation. We read, for example, that La Rossetta (phone 06 686 1002) serves, "scallops with cram of artichoke and mint" (page 89) We read that Trattoria Monti (phone 06 446 6573) serves, "sheep's cheese aged in caves, goose, swordfish, sultanas, and truffles" (page 138).

HOTELS. Regarding hotels, we learn that the recommended hotels in the district called, MONTI, ESQUILINO & SAN LORENZO, includes Villa Spalletti Trivelli (the rooms overlook the gardens of Quirinale); Hotel Duca D'Alba (the rooms have walls covered with fabric); Residenza Cellini (decor includes potted palms and oil paintings); and Albergo Giusti (this hotel is run by nuns. I guess that I should not be bringing my girlfriend to THIS PARTICULAR HOTEL!). The chapter on hotels (pages 236-248) contains a paragraph about each of 80 hotels.

WARNINGS. The book is to be commended for its honesty, and there are two pages that warn the tourist about pickpockets and gropers (pages 314-315). The guidebook also contains a chapter on history and demographics (pages 249-283), and we learn about various evil emperors and about recent political scandals.

CONCLUSION. The wealth of detail, intriguing facts, and anecdotes about history, will be an inspiration to all readers. My only complaint is that the photos are not on glossy paper.

a disappointment

I have used Lonely Planets guide books for almost 20 years in three continents; this is the first time I feel the book is not worth the purchase cost.
Since Roma (Rome) is a city I have visited in the past, I was looking for hints and tips to less-visited places. After all this guide is supposed to be written by someone who actually lives in the city.
Alas, the volume is very skimpy in the discussion of the history and art of the monuments, to the point of lacking even what I would consider some basic info. The sight are grouped by areas, in haphazard order, so that one has to keep flipping back-and-forth through the pages to find the description of what he is seeing. The book index is poorly organized, and cross-references are few and far between.
No pre-defined walking routes are mapped or suggested.
The included city map is alphabetized atrociously; instead of being organized by the relevant noun, it takes the geographical identifier as the starting point for the index. So, for example, "via del Gianicolo" is found in the 'V' part of the index, and "passeggiata di Gianicolo" in the 'P' part, instead of both being next to each other in the 'G' part as "Gianicolo, via del" and "Gianicolo, passeggiata di". By comparison the free maps distributed by the local tourist office are an example of clarity and usefulness.
This was the first time I purchased a second guide (the Rick Steve's one, which is better but still not outstanding) and intentionally left this book in the hotel room, to avoid bringing it back with me.
I would reccomend this guide only to someone who thinks that the essential parts of travelling is sampling the local nightlife and shopping the high fashion district.

Let's go Rome!!!!

No regrets on choosing this little gem. I only wish for more time in Rome!

Roma IS an amaaaazing city. You MUST see it.

And this is a good little guide. Things I really LIKE about it:
1) Handy portable size,small enough for a bag or to tote-along with you, but large enough to cram in lots of information and some pictures.
2) Though it doesn't really have a LOT of pictures (I wish for more), it does seem to have at least one good shot of most all of the big stuff (Rome is so FULL, it's really not possible for a small guide to photograph EVERYTHING).
3) The "What's new" section.
4) Handy details, like...where are the "loos" in relation to the Colleseum.
5) On a short trip? There are helpful suggestions like "Rome's Top 13" and a suggested three hour itenerary for the highlight's of the Vatican.
6) Got more time? Infomation on day escusions outside the side.
7) Month by month festival suggestions.
8) Clear tear out maps. Plenty of maps.

And...why it lost a star:
1.) I did want more pics.
2.) Wish it was a little more at-first-glance usable. Took a little more getting-to-know, but it was inviting.*** (This is the main reason for the lost star.)
3.) Wished for a few more short-trip maximize-you-time suggestions (like #5 above).
4.) Kind of wanted glossier pages.

Good stuff. It's not *perfect* but I recommend. And I would definately buy another Loney Planet Book.

PRINT SIZE: Not a criticism here. It HAS to be smallish to cram enough into this small book, but if you've graduated to reading glasses: Yes, you will need them for this.

This book was neat. It clearly explained various methods of lotion making in a step by step process. I especially liked the last chapter where the author tells us how to make sunscreen lotion, antibacterial lotion, etc. In this world of chemicals, making lotions using natural and easily available products is a great thing. It's highly appreciated that she shared so much information.

This is the best lotion making guide out there. After reading this, I was able to make some awesome lotions that I can use after my showers. They are moisturizing, cleansing, and I feel great after I use them. Check out the Aloe Vera ones, they are my favorite. Highly recommend this book for those with dry skin.

Interesting, enjoyable, and helpful book

Although this book was published 12 years ago, the principles are still valid and important. The author openly prefers a dressy form of casual attire, but in the right business environment this can be advantageous. The book is written in an entertaining style and full of interesting, helpful pictures. If you read the book now, pay attention to the timeless, useful principles, and don't be put off by clothing trends that are no longer current. I wish I had read this book many years ago. Incidentally, the classic book "Dress for Success" is still invaluable. I have seen many people criticize that book by saying it is no longer valid, but if you look at how top executives are dressed, you will see they are still sticking closely to the same formula.

Addresses Important Casual Issue

The best things about Casual Power are the illustrations and pictures. You can really see what Sherry Maysonave is talking about. Business casual continues to be difficult to get right years after this book was published. The colorful attire that Maysonave contemplated has reverted back to more conservative colors.

Nevertheless, the ideas the author expressed haven't changed. Business casual doesn't mean casual and it makes an impression on people. The variety of decisions that can be made about attire is astounding. There is not one article of clothing that is "the answer." The trick is to find the right business casual clothing for oneself and one's job, and to make it work with the least amount of clothing.

A lot of the cheap clothing one finds is not good enough and that presents a major problem. It takes time to figure out and shop for the more appropriate outfits. One can end up owning more than is necessary just because things don't match, don't last or fall out of fashion.

I like to dress comfortably and casually. I work for a corporation that allows this and have worn cargo shorts, short sleeved shirts, and other very casual attire to the workplace.

Best Book on the Brain Gut Connection

This book is so far ahead of its time I could barely believe it. Aristo has managed to masterfully understand and explain in detail the workings of the immune system and specifically how dysbiosis leads to leaky gut, food allergies, systemic inflammation, autoimmunity, neuroinvasion, neuroinflammation, neurological autoimmunity, and neurodegeneration. A must read if you have leaky gut food allergies and or autoimmunity. The book is definitely technical but the diagrams are great.

Great book, easy to absorb, and good format. The practice tests were spot-on and helped me pass with no problem. The wording is simplified, so I could easily understand the laws that were being discussed without getting too lost in dense legalese.

This is a GREAT BOOK

If you're looking for a book to help you study and properly prepare you look no further. I used this book to study and pass the notary test on my first try. Book has a great format, easy to understand and the test are an excellent study guide. I was nervous when I purchased this book, but I sat down to take my exam and didnt miss a beat. Finished my exam in 20 minutes

2016 - The guide, and what to expect to get Notary Public Commission in New York State

Passed my NY state Notary Test of the first try with the help of this book. Forget all the other study guides - this is all you need. PLEASE do the study guide IN ORDER. . Took test, got results in 7 -10 days. Submitted applications and less then 4 weeks later I got my license. Total time - Spend 4- 6 weeks reviewing this book. Take the practice tests. You need to get 28 multiple choice questions (out of 40) to pass.
I was issued my notary license in less about 4 weeks from taking the test to submitting application. $15 test fee, $60 for 4 years. Plus the stamp custom order on Vista Print is $42 or XrubberStamp has a less expensive 5 line one for less than $20 with shipping (no prime)
