Great book, don't listen to the negative reviews.

It's not perfect but has tons of content. One of the reviews said it has misinformation because it classifies humans as "carnivores", but some recent studie shave classified humans as such "based on the percentage of meat in the typical human diet". Another negative review said the information is shallow and gave this example: "Some question do not even have answers like this one, 'why some animals are big and some are smalls?' the answer 'life happens everywhere it can on this amazing planet. life comes in every size, shape and color' ? what kind of answer is that?" Well, I think is a very good answer for the audience the book is intended for. Why are some animals big and others small? Because there are all kinds of animals in the world, some big and some small. I think it's a perfectly valid answer. If your kid needs more information you can teach him about evolution for an hour if you want. You have to understand the purpose of this book is having a lot of questions and a lot of content. If they start going deeper into answers then that means less content. I rather have more questions with simple answers than a few questions with 3 pages of an answer.

Finally, another reviewer seems to be confusing this book for something else and tries to show the "inaccuracies" but only comes off as a trying to display his knowledge of things. We get it, you know how to use wikipedia, guess what? This is a book for "KIDS", if you want to show off how much you know why don't you review a PHD book on physics?

This is a great book with tons of content and my kid loves it. It's not perfect, but that's why you're there as a parent.

What , why , how - these are the basic questions of a curious mind and for a curious little mind the big question is why.
National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Why is very much successful in answering this big question of a small word why.
This book is of a big size with a hard cover. Paper material is of very good quality so that when a child turns the page rapidly they do not tear off.
The book is made for a child in real sense. The answers to each why is given in such an easy manner that a child can easily get the answers to his/her why. An newer to a why question can be given in two ways 1) theoretically 2) practically -
This book adopts the way of giving practical answers in a very simple manner without losing any important theoretical fact. I really miss this book as my childhood book of knowledge. This book gives all the answers in such a nice and simple way that it has become my 3 year old daughter's most favorite friend and guide.
Each why question and its answers is described with beautiful colorful pictures so that knowledge becomes accurate and practical in real sense.
Not only the answers are given, in some sections there are also some exercises where a child can apply his knowledge which he.she has gained from the previous topics.

My daughter and we really love National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Why and after finishing this one we will be interested in buying other books of National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book .

I got this for my 2,5 years old and she likes it a lot. I like how good the pictures look, how bright the colors are. Some explanations aren't as good as they could be, but it's still a nice book to have.

Pain Relief for Content Marketing Chaos

First, I have had the opportunity to meet Jeff, but we don't have any personal or professional connections. I was at an AMA chapter event where Jeff presented an overview of Agile Marketing. I was impressed enough to attend a day-long Agile Content Marketing workshop he lead/facilitated. My observations are:
1. Agile Marketing is a discipline that can help marketing departments with too much to do and not enough resources to get it done. It's a proven approach for success amidst chaos.
2. Jeff combines a passion for Agile Marketing with broad experience using Agile and a very practical approach to helping people begin using Agile techniques at work (and, for me, to help conquer my ADHD at home).
3. With Agile Marketing, Jeff effectively translates in-person training into book. form. I'd recommend this book to any one interested in learning a very valuable set of marketing management skills.

Just ok

Nothing new here. Typical high school coming out story. What bothers me about this story is the stilted conversations between the characters. The author seems unable to form natural conversations There's maybe a handful of times in the entire story where he uses a contraction. Almost all conversations are like this: "I am sorry. I have been stupid.", instead of the more natural sounding "I'm sorry. I've been stupid." Also,the ending seemed incomplete. Does Alex come out to his parents? Maybe there will be a book three to continue the story. If so, there should have been a "to be continued" at the end.

Why do you have to prove you are straight when accused of being gay?

No one questions the pretenders on the boy/girl dates, but just being with another boy (who is rumored to be gay) automatically is guilty as charged with no chance for parole. Perhaps the teen years are too guarded to allow experimentation on who you like and who you love. Too often the choices are forced and are wrong for the person accused. Trying to disprove anything about sex and love is an impossible task, with only losers, often scarred for life or dead. If the gay and homeless suicide rate was compared to the annual death rate for teen drivers, no one would be driving or drinking. But it is OK to bully and beat on suspected gays just because you hate homosexuality? Why is the gay kid jailed for being beaten up, only to be raped and beaten more in jail? This book and the previous one do a great job of illustrating the problems caused by hate, but struggle to show the glories of love. The closet is not a safe place to hide, but it impossible to avoid opening the door at least occasionally, and risk all every time. Who is the stronger character? Liam, Tristan, Rick, Eric, Jacob, Rosa, Colin, or

This is the second book (following Swimmer Boy) in the series. What the description does not say is how we see the struggles that Alex has also affect Liam. The bully becomes more methodical and manipulating, interfering with both Alex and Liam in their already difficult relationship. I suggest reading Swimmer Boy first, then this book, to follow the entire story line. The author has a very compelling story-telling ability.

About the Author

Carol Ptak is currently freelancing and was most recently at Pacific Lutheran University as Visiting Professor and Distinguished Executive in Residence after years of executive management experience at PeopleSoft and IBM Corporation as well as many years of consulting expertise. Previously, Ptak served as the vice president and global industry executive for manufacturing and distribution industries at PeopleSoft. Here she developed the concept of Demand Driven Manufacturing (DDM) as an overall product and marketing strategy to align product development, market awareness and demand generation. Her innovative approach is credited with significantly improving the company’s position in the manufacturing industry software market and earned her national recognition in publications such as CFO Magazine and the New York Times. Prior to her accomplished record at PeopleSoft, Ptak spent four years at IBM Corporation starting as a member of the worldwide ERP/SCM solutions sales team and quickly rising to the position of global SMB segment executive. From 1993-98, Ptak owned Eagle Enterprises, a consulting firm that promotes company-wide excellence through education and successful implementation.

Chad Smith is the co-founder and Managing Partner of Constraints Management Group (CMG: www.thoughtwarepeople.com), a services and technology company specializing in pull-based manufacturing, materials, and project management systems for mid-range and large manufacturers. DDMRP - The right driver at the controls - Customer Demand

This new edition very lucidly replaces inventory from the driver seat with customer demand. This ground breaking approach - that combines best practices of Theory of Constraints and Lean - answers questions that most Planning personnel have, regardless of size and industry and what type of MRP they are currently using. And the best part is that the concepts (along with matching technology tools) outlined in this book have been implemented across industries with astonishing results. DDMRP approach covers the whole gamut of supply chain - purchase parts, all through the bill of materials to finished goods and finally to distribution. The bottom line results are counter intuitive - higher service levels, while inventories go down! That is something no executive would like to leave it on the table. Hence a must read for executives in Sales, Operations and Financial disciplines.

Groundbreaking insights for manufacturing and supply chain

The heart of any supply chain is manufacturing and this book provides a major advance in strategies and tactics for managing the flow of materials through a manufacturing company. In spite of the market buzz in recent years about the importance of Supply Chain performance little has been done to address the shortcomings of traditional material requirements planning (MRP) tactics and technology.

Chad Smith and Carol Ptak have addressed the shortcomings in MRP in their book. They have brought forward the key insights that will allow companies to achieve substantial improvements in order fill rates, compress order lead times while concurrently reducing their inventories and working capital. They have described in very clear terms the core challenges that exist today and the changes that must be implemented to achieve substantial and sustainable performance improvements. It should be noted that they have worked with a wide range of companies who've applied their tactics and achieved incredible results.

This book will be a key tool for material planners, procurement leaders, plant managers and senior manufacturing executives alike.

Fresh thinking on MRP

Orlicky's MRP has been an authoritative source of information about Material Requirements Planning for decades. I remember how the first edition, with its distinctive orange cover, changed manufacturing and inventory control by showing how computers could automate calculations and record keeping that were previously impractical. Nearly two decades later, Plossl's second edition incorporated innovations such as Just-in-Time Manufacturing and Total Quality Management.

In the decades since the second edition, however, profound changes have occurred in the fields of manufacturing and inventory control, and in the information technology that supports them. Global supply chains and global markets today require different management practices from those that used to prevail. Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma are no longer novelties. And IT today can do things that Orlicky and Plossl could not have envisioned.

In the third edition, Carol Ptak and Chad Smith show how recent insights are once again altering how MRP is implemented and used. For instance, driving parts requirements completely through the bill of materials is now known to be unnecessary, and sometimes counter-productive, because it contributes to excess inventory in some areas while simultaneously creating shortages elsewhere. The solution, demand driven planning, is covered in this edition, as well as synchronized replenishment, project manufacturing, process manufacturing, remanufacturing, and more.

I was able to review the third edition before it was published, so I know that it introduces a considerable amount of new material. For anyone wanting to know where cutting edge thinking is on MRP nowadays, this is it.

An incredible book showcasing the power of effective branding. Something that I appreciate most about this book is how the author David Airey shows you his thoughts, sketches and ideas. A resource to have in your possession if you are someone who enjoys branding, or creates brands for others.

Also, out of all the books I have read on this subject. David hit's it home in a way that makes sense.

Every graphic designer should read this.

I am a graphic designer and I can not say enough good things about this book. It is a fantastic book for graphic designers and identity experts.I cannot attest to the difference between the first and second edition as I only read this one. The sheer quality of the advice and case studies in this book is incredible. The information in this book is presented in such a matter of fact manner that not only is it a pretty quick read but very easy to absorb. The only down side I could possibly think of for this book is that it could probably be twice as long if Airey went into more detail on some of the more complex theories in this book. I will definitely be coming back to this book again and again as a resource while designing my graphic identities.

I really feel the book simply a showcase of the successful work by some of the largest design firms in the business. Female writer gets it right

I won't summarize the story, because you have several other summaries already. I will only say this: Several of the analytical comments below are simply wrong. O'Brien's view of Ireland's history is right on the mark. Ireland's "troubles" really started in the 1100's when Irishman Dermott McMurragh asked King Henry II of England to allow him to recruit Anglo-Norman mercenary soldiers to help him defeat his Irish enemy. Those mercenaries came, liked it, and stayed. THAT was the beginning of the English occupation of Ireland. But even before that, Irish families fought among themselves for control of the land and resources. You only have to read the "Cattle Raid of Cooley" to know that. In a very real sense, there IS blood in the very soil of Ireland. And O'Brien is RIGHT that the only way to ever solve that problem--or the Middle Eastern problem or the American racial problem--is for EVERY voice to be heard (that's why the narrative voice keeps changing; it is purposeful)and EVERY person to be known as a human being and not just as "them" or "the enemy."
She has these two unlikely people, each with their grievously painful stories, come to know and respect each other. She becomes like Mother Ireland (Cathleen ni Houlihan) to him, and he becomes to her like the child that she never had, the one she aborted.
It is a book that is about understanding and forgiveness, a theme amazingly and ultimately spoken through the voice of the aborted child itself. In the first chapter, this dead child's spirit hates her mother and wants her to suffer, but in the end, she understands and forgives. That is what the child prays for in the end, understanding and forgiveness.

Spare Prose and Extraordinary Power

Edna O'Brien in general and this very fine novel in particular deserve a much greater readership. The plot here -- IRA fugitive, McGreevy, hides out in the crumbling home of an aged widow, Josie -- is the simple premise on which O'Brien builds a vertiginous, multi-layered tale of fatefully intersecting interpersonal and national histories. The third person narrative points of view are multiple and, especially in the quick cuts to those on the fugitive's trail, occasionally confusing. McGreevy and Josie are both superbly drawn and utterly convincing, although their emotional linkage is achieved too quickly, just as the flashbacks to Josie's horrid marriage make her reveries of quiet good times with her husband scarcely credible. The prose is spare, with no wasted words, and one of the wonders of this novel is that O'Brien nonetheless thoroughly conveys the lushness of the drizzly Irish countryside, the complexity of the struggle and the underlying sense of national unity that all the characters -- no matter how harshly at war with one another -- feel. And she has packaged all that in what is also from start to finish a superbly suspenseful tale. The 230 or so pages flash by, making The House of Splendid Isolation an exciting and rewarding one-sitting read.

Splendid writing, spendid story.

If you read the Kirkus Review above, you won't even have to buy the book, if all you are interested in is the plot.

Fortunately, there's much more here, and I wish I knew how O'Brien does it! Of the thousands of books I've read, this is the first one which really made me feel that the author "let the story tell itself." For most of the book, there's no sense that an author is pulling strings or trying to create. She "merely" presents fully drawn characters, and they truly live on the page.

Yet at the conclusion, the admiring reader realizes that every conflict and ultimate reversal in the book has had a fine hand guiding, but never obviously controlling, it--from Josie's psychological imprisonment to McGreevy's escapes, from her frustrations in love to his satisfactions, from her experiences that life is something that happens to her to his belief that one must mobilize to work toward a higher goal, from their attitudes toward the church to their conflicted feelings about the IRA.

Somewhat extravagant in its romanticism at the end, that extravagance, nevertheless, is totally appropriate to its subject, its characters, and its Irish setting.

Outstanding overview of language in gaming

Page for page, this is one of the most academically rigorous and informative books in game studies. I have a fairly shallow background in linguistics, and this book was tremendously helpful in applying linguistic techniques to my own analysis. Each chapter concludes with a short case study demonstrating the usefulness of the techniques or properties of gaming language explained; the excerpts, while brief, are lucid and quickly demonstrate what linguistic analysis has to offer the study of games. I suspect that undergraduates could use this slim book to conduct interesting research in a field that familiar to them and easy to access. While the tone of this book is quite academic, the chapters are of a very manageable length and waste little time: the references and connections to broader semiotic theory and linguistics are there for scholars, and the meat of the content is accessible enough for any student.

My only complaint is that the corpus of linguistic analysis Ensslin refers to throughout the book is not yet available; I'm sure it will be a tremendous asset to games researchers when it's finished.

I think this book will be useful to any qualitative researcher studying games and highly recommend it.

About the Author
Samir Elias has a Doctorate in Engineering from the University of Massachusetts and a Masters in economics from the University of Technology in the UK. He worked as a research engineer developing new products at two different private companies in the US. In 1994 he raised venture capital to start his own engineering company which was sold to an international company in 1999. Between 1994 and 1997 he was involved in a real estate investment partnership in Ohio and Massachusetts. During that period he was intrigued by stock and option trading and how mathematical principles can be aplied to enhancing trading and investment profits. In 1997 , using his experience in computer modeling of multiphase dynamic systems which was the focus of his doctorate dissertation, he developed a mathematical approach using convergence divergence charts to model long term stock movements .This model was simplified enought to obtain effective results using hand drawn charts once a week. With the proliferation of the internet and increased interest and accessibilty of short term trading he developed unique combinations of technical indicators to predict short term stock movements with over 75% accuracy. In 1997 , he sold his real estate partnership and started trading part time at Insight Securities in Wichita KS until they closed in late 1998. Presntly , he is a full time option and stock trader and investor.

It's working for me

I traded stocks and futures for the past 13 yrs using various platforms, including Tradestation, Streetsmart Pro, E-Trade and others. I hired mentors & tutors, took classes, seminars, hands-on schools, read books [you should see my stack],a nd worked with other traders who had sophisticated trading programs.

I stayed away from options, since in my personal research I concluded that due to the time deterioration nature of options and their complexities, I saw no way of trading options and winning-- ever.

While I kept losing money, I heard that my uncle was doing well in options. I couldn't believe it. I didn't believe it-- since I also heard that he didn't have a computer and lived in rural Georgia, talking only to his broker by phone and working with paper statements. I made it a point to interview my uncle, only to discover I indeed had a "rich" uncle with a "system" that worked. This "system" he merely said was "common sense"-- but after he explained it to me, the lights came on.

I then searched Amazon for books that specifically talked about the ONLY TWO options transactions my uncle traded with: money-secured puts and covered calls. I was led to this book by Dr Elias.

The first 11 Chapters are the most important-- and it is important to note that when Dr Elias is talking about calls or put transactions in these chapters, he is almost exclusively talking about money-secured puts and covered calls. There is only one place in the book where he warns you that to BUY a call or BUY a put places you in a position where you are working against the clock and that every minute, your investment is losing value. Take that warning to heart!

I also need to correct page 33, where the text should read [correction is in caps:]:
"Selling one CALL option implies that you are selling CALL options on the amount of shares of stock you are holding. Selling two CALL options implies that you are doing that on twice the shares you hold." The editor mistakenly used the word 'put' where CALL should be, in explaining a covered call.

Indeed, this book covers in detail, and with profitable variations, my uncle's strategy. The last two chapters on Thinking outside the Box and the Epilogue are valuable. The other chapters were of little value to me since I already know a great deal about chart patterns, reversals, candle sticks, doji's and the like. All this is good information, but -- in my view-- "filler" to the 'real meat' of the winning strategy of obtaining recurring option premiums, over and over and over again.

I have been trading this strategy for 3 months and I am up 15% with no losses.
Try getting that from a CD or Money Market Fund.

A Profitable book written by a successful trader

I do not have to tell anyone that most trading book writers derive the majority of their income from seminars , trading camps and books rather than from actual trading. Only a handful of trading book authors are successfull traders, and It was a pleasure to read a book written by someone who trades for a living.
Before moving to my current location, I belonged to a local trade group run by the author with a maximum allowable membership of fifty. In the eight months I belonged to the group, I saw traders including myself make profits above $3000 per week using methods most of which are detailed in this book, as well as the other trading book written by the same author.

After moving to my current location , I continued implementing the strategies I learned from the trade group as well as others from the book. Although my results do not match those obtained when I was an active member of the group, I am able to cash in between $30,000 to $50,000 per year on a 150,000 trading account.
I obtained these results by selling options on three to five stocks each month and collecting a net premium of near $1000 per stock. This is easily achievable if you pick the right stocks using ideas from author's other book "Explosive Stock Trading Strategies" and then combine them with concepts from this book to determine the right option parameters such as implied volatility , premium and expiration date.
For those who are interested in specifics, I start by scanning for stocks that meet the " Falling Knife" and "Momentum Shift" setups in the book "Explosive stock trading strategies". These setups offer, in addition to a high probability of upward reversal , unique option properties. These are :high option implied volatility and high vega, implying that the premium moves significantly with moderate moves in volatility. These properties allow selling low risk out of the money puts at strikes below market price for hefty premiums. Once the stock moves up the high vega results in a significant drop in the premium allowing me to buy back the option often for less than one quarter of the premium I obtained. Try this strategy and you will see that you do not need more than a handful of such stocks to create a respectable monthly income on your account.

Many creative ideas that will make your profits soar

This book contains a large number of ideas that can deliver big profits while at the same time being different from run of the mill option books. I used several concepts in the book to trade options successfully with impressive profits. One highly effective strategy I used recently is the VPV up reversal where the author mentions on page 240 that such setups result in a quick move to the next resistance. SCTY gave a VPV reversal signal on 6/11/2014 son I sold puts on the stock on June 12 at a $55 strike and expiring June 21. I chose the $55 strike since it is the next resistance. I obtained a premium of $4.90 per share for 20 contracts or a total of $9800 in premiums. The stock moved to above $64 on June 17 and the option premium was down to $0.05 resulting in a net profit of $9700 in 5 days.
