Chaos and Fractals: An Elementary Introduction, by David P. Feldman

This book provides the reader with an elementary introduction to chaos and fractals, suitable for students with a background in elementary algebra, without assuming prior coursework in calculus or physics. It introduces the key phenomena of chaos - aperiodicity, sensitive dependence on initial conditions, bifurcations - via simple iterated functions. Fractals are introduced as self-similar geometric objects and analyzed with the self-similarity and box-counting dimensions. After a brief discussion of power laws, subsequent chapters explore Julia Sets and the Mandelbrot Set. The last part of the book examines two-dimensional dynamical systems, strange attractors, cellular automata, and chaotic differential equations.

The book is richly illustrated and includes over 200 end-of-chapter exercises. A flexible format and a clear and succinct writing style make it a good choice for introductory courses in chaos and fractals.

Review

"For the right audience and instructor, this is a wonderful book. With considerable effort on both sides it can take a wide audience with modest mathematics to a reasonable understanding of what is behind much of the complex phenomena seen in modern mathematical models of the physical universe."
-- Thomas B. Ward, Durham University

"There is a great deal to like about this book, starting with the author's writing style, which I found particularly clear and enjoyable. ... All in all, this is a very valuable book. ... This is an excellent book and is highly recommended." --Mark Hunacek, MAA Reviews

This is the most basic place do start studying Chaos and Fractals: From high algebra to Differential Equations.
By Julio Cesar Campos Neto
Ive read a bunch of Chaos and Fractals books, and this one is really the basic place to start Chaos and Fractals math. And now with Prof Feldman's online course (Complexity Explorer website) theres really no excuse to learn the subject anymore :). Very well done Prof. Feldman!. This is a great book and I really felt envy of Prof Feldman Students.

Other book I really liked is Flake's Computational Beauty of Nature which you can read in parallel or after this one.

Well Written, Very Clear, Fun to read!
By T. Bond
I have read many books on the subject. This one is the best. The author goes out of his way to explain things clearly. No matter how complex the topic, he does a great job explaining it with both words and graphics.

A must have
By Occasional Reviewer
So I was fortunate enough to take David Feldman's MOOC through the Santa Fe Institute on dynamical systems. He was just amazing in the course, one of the most likeable teachers I have ever had. Dynamical systems (chaos and fractals are part of that, sort of, kind of), are not trivial to understand. Yet Dr. Feldman is such a master teacher that he makes it look easy and interesting, very interesting. The good news is that he writes like he teaches. This book gets into far more detail than the more popular titles by Gleik and others. It is not a tome like the ones targeted at math geniuses either. It is right in the middle, not too much, not too little, but just right. The middle bear of chaos. Feldman is as patient a writer as he is a teacher and will repeat himself in a masterful way to ensure you get the concept. He writing is approachable, just like he is. He is wicked smart, but does not need to rub it in your face. And he does not.

The book is broad in its aim to give you a complete overview of chaos and fractals (dynamical systems) along with the math, but in a way that anyone can get it. This is a must have. His MOOC is a must take and he is a gift to the world of students. He is that rare teacher you never forget and always appreciate and his book is the same.

decent ideas; editing is otherwise
By rose
Perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but I like my books to have a little punctuation in them besides commas, periods, and quotation marks.
I do understand that the model for publishing has changed with the advent of e-books, but the need for decent writing, grammar, and editing has not.

One pass with a spell-checker does not constitute editing, by the way; it only gets rid of the most blatant spelling errors. Clearly, this book did not have any work after that first spell-check, not even a quick glance to make sure the word corrections did not result in substitutions of incorrect words. Seriously, a "palaver" full of bacon? Also, the plural of most English words is formed by adding an s, not apostrophe s: Mothers, Earls, Dukes, Horses rather than Mother's, Earl's, Duke's, Horse's. That one really bugs me, and for some incomprehensible reason, Kindle authors seem to have inordinate difficulties with it.

I really wish Kindle authors would take their craft more seriously, and ask for proofreading help.

Poor Writing
By D. R. Crummitt
I couldn't get more than halfway through this book because the grammar and spelling was so bad. The narration flipped back and forth in a single paragraph. Past and present tense was used interchangeably. Sentence fragments occurred frequently. I tried to power through this but I just couldn't do it.

Great story
By Kindle Customer
As a fan of the Regency Period stories this story was different from most. A soldier who was never supposed to inherit the estate of his Grandfather the Duke comes home to find his estate run by a young woman of 20. Of course she ran away from her evil step father who sold her to a degenerate Earl to cover a gambling debt. Society being as strict about rules means that they can't marry.....But his Aunt sets out to change her standing in the ton. We have duels, balls , a Prince, soldiers and young women who are having a great time. It's a story about finding happiness no matter what ones station is.

Review
“The Jesus Storybook Bible is unlike any other storybook. True, that’s to be expected when you combine the mesmerizing illustrations of Jago and the award-winning writing of Sally Lloyd-Jones, a Brit with an uncanny knack for storytelling. Not only is each story as vividly illustrated as it is portrayed, but also each tale is telling one Big Story---the Story of Jesus. Even the Old Testament stories of ‘The young hero and the horrible giant’ and ‘Daniel and the scary sleepover’ come full circle to Jesus, the greatest Hero, King, Lover and Rescuer the world has ever known. (More to Life Magazine)

''The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name' disproves the adage that you can't judge a book by its cover. Jago's award-winning cover art is a foretaste of the whimsically insightful and richly colored drawings that await you on every one of the book's 351 pages. The illustrations alone are worth the price of the book....Jago the illustrator, and Sally Lloyd-Jones the author, are a good pair. She brings the same creativity and sense of humor to her telling of the Bible's stories....But Lloyd-Jones's writing isn't cutesy. She has a grasp of the profound. How does one explain to a child the agony of Jesus in Gethsemane, and his prayer of surrender to his Father? Lloyd-Jones does it as well as any biblical commentator....The title and subtitle are even better than the book's delightful illustrations and narrative -- because they provide, in one deft stroke, the interpretive key that unlocks the meaning of the whole Bible. 'The Jesus Storybook Bible' says it all: The Scriptures are not merely a collection of stories designed to teach moral lessons. As Jesus explained to the men walking the road to Emmaus on Resurrection Sunday, the whole Bible is about Jesus. In the words of the subtitle, every story whispers his name....Lloyd-Jones manages to show again and again the presence of Christ in all the Old Testament Scriptures, and the presence of the Old Testament Scriptures in the life of Christ.' (Christianity Today)

The Jesus Storybook Bible is, in my opinion, one of the best resources available to help both children and adults see the Jesus-centered story line of the Bible. Tullian Tchividjian , Senior Pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church (PCA, Fort Lauderdale, FL.)

Review
In the interests of full disclosure, let me reveal that I had the privilege of reading the manuscript of this book several years ago as a theological consultant to Zondervan, the publisher. I did not know, however, of the fulsome thanks to my husband Tim in the acknowledgments until I received my review copy a few days ago. Sally Lloyd-Jones, a Redeemer member for many years, has done a wondrous thing. She has captured the plot line of redemption in a children's story Bible that sings the praise of Jesus and his saving grace on every page, in every story. Most children's books of Bible stories are little more than a Christianized version of Aesop's fables, or at best, a Christian adventure cartoon. But Sally goes out of her way in the first pages of the book to reclaim the true story of the Bible: not a book of rules, nor a book of heroes, but: “The Bible is most of all a Story…It's like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life! You see, the best thing about this Story is--it's true! There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them.” This is heady theology, often missed in adult preaching and teaching, but fully realized in an age appropriate and attractive form that will delight children and often (at least for me) leave the grown up reader in tears. More wondrously, she has avoided the moralism and legalism that so often characterizes Christian educational materials for children. For five years I worked as an editor of children's curriculum, requiring me to review, edit, and sometimes write Sunday school material for children. It is very hard to find (or even produce) material for children that doesn't essentially contain the message “Be good, so that God, your heavenly Father, will love you, and your earthly parents will be happy with you, too.” To discover The Jesus Storybook Bible is to have a unique resource for communicating the gospel to children in all it's fullness. I hope that every family, and even people without young children, would get a copy of this book just to remind them of what the Real Story of the Bible is all about. -- Kathy Keller

From the Author
I wrote this so children could know that God is for them and loves them with a Never Stopping, Never Giving up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love.

a PLAY ALL feature added to the DVD!!!
By Margaret C.
I can tell you from the original edition of The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name that I loved it. The Curriculum Kit I saw contained the same Bible book as the original. I assumed that this was also the case with the Jesus Storybook Bible Deluxe Edition With CD (Audio) but I realize now that I think I'm wrong and that one is similar to the Collector's Edition. I think the difference between the Deluxe and the Collector's Editions is that the Collector's Edition comes with a DVD with the whole Storybook Bible narrated with animations. With all of that excitement, however today I have two more exciting and different editions. I have heard of a larger read-aloud version but I have not seen it.

Today I can tell you that I am ooh-and-ahh-ing over a Collector's Edition. The same size as the original, the same size book as The Rhyme Bible Storybook (2012 ed), but this one is in a box like Sweetest Story Bible Deluxe Edition: Sweet Thoughts and Sweet Words for Little Girls that includes a sleeve of discs. The discs included with The Jesus Storybook Bible Collector's Edition are three CDs and one DVD. In comparison with The Jesus Storybook Bible Curriculum Kit these are the same CDs as far as I can tell with the whole Bible storybook audio narration but it is the DVD that is different. With the curriculum kit it was a DVD-Rom. Use it on your computer and access curriculum supplies. This is just a DVD movie with the video files, but with one major improvement in a "play all" feature! When my daughter would want to watch her Bible Stories and I had to go through the menu select and repeat this action after every 1-3 minutes of animation it got old really quickly. Now there is the option to just let her watch it through or I can still choose a specific chapter and video.

The hardcover Bible book itself is also different from what I knew in the original JSB Bible Storybook alone and with the Kit. This is not the glossy colorful full of illustrations one. This looks to me like picture I have seen of the larger read aloud edition (in image, not size). It is the perfect small size, but it's simple. There is a burgundy spine with the name, author/illustrator, publisher and collector's edition and the cover has a medallion with the image of Jesus surrounded by a simple and elegant marbled ivory. The back cover is void of any adornment except a text ISBN at the bottom, just ivory and burgundy. The interior appears to be all the same that I am familiar with except the front and back pages attached to the covers are an attractive burgundy instead of a light blue/white and there is a fabulous ribbon bookmark attached. :)

As for the Bible material itself... How do I even begin? Ok, let's start with the Bible. The Jesus Storybook Bible is enchanting and unlike any storybook Bible I have experienced thus far (and trust me, I've seen a few!). Every single story in this storybook Bible points to Jesus. From the creation and Adam and Eve's fall, Jesus is the solution. In the building of the Tower of Babel, Jesus is the answer. When Abraham leads his son Isaac to the alter, Christ is the lamb promised. Every story, every parable, every word comes down to Jesus Christ from the beginning and all the way until the end. It is solid in a Biblical foundation and traces everything to redemption through Jesus.

Reading through the physical Bible is an experience with the vivid illustrations that definitely interest a child (any anyone's mind). But there is so much more... listening to the audio version of the Bible is enchanting. David Suchet (reminds me of Jim Dale) reads with such voices that bring the characters off the page. We've found that you can read along, or just listen in the background - maybe during breakfast or getting ready for a nap. The beginning segment states is all and brings it to life.

"No, the Bible isn't a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. It's an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It's a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne--everything--to rescue the one he loves. It's like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life!

You see, the best thing about this Story is--it's true...[It's a] Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them."

It makes my heart smile! If the Bible wasn't already fabulous, and then the audio version even cooler, why not try to video version. In the DVD, there are 44 short clip storybook animations to go along with the text. These are AppleBlossom's favorite right now. She goes back and forth between asking to listen to the Bible or watch the Bible. How can you turn down that request?!

This Bible is the first children's storybook Bible that I have found that doesn't go too far in watering down the stories. It tells the harsh truth in certain circumstances but always brings it back around to the hope and joy that we can have in the love of the Lord. When I first started looking into The Jesus Storybook Bible I read a few reviews that mentioned a child being frightened of God not loving him after reading of Adam and Even thinking to themselves in question of whether God loved them once they had eaten the apple. The reviewer was adamant that it was from reading this Bible that her child developed an insecurity complex. But if she had read the whole story, and not just stopped while the going was tough then the reassurance that God does love us, will always love us and always be there because he loves us would shine through. (And I don't just mean the WHOLE storybook - I mean each and every individual story, because every single one shines out his love and glory).

While with any change and Bible translation or novelization different readers can find flaw in interpretations and cause a fuss. My overall opinion is that the main message is there. Sure as your child grows and uses this and other Bibles they can learn about all the various elements and sides of God. Yet for what it is, this it the most detailed Bible with more stories and situations that I have seen thus far in a early elementary age and younger Bible storybook and I do recommend it.

Now I'm super excited about the Collector's Edition, but let's step it up just a bit more so I can tell you about my complete elation for the leatherbound version. Ooooh it's like butter! With a spine simply displaying The Jesus Storybook Bible and the publisher's logo it is elegant. The front cover has Jesus in a medallion and an outer border all engraved. All of this is on a smooth amber-red-honey toned brown fine binding Italian duo-tone leather. Pictures I have seen online do not do it justice.

The front and back interior glued pages are, again like the Collector's edition hardcover, an attractive and elegant burgundy. The edges of the pages are a guilded gold with rounded corners and then my favorite thing is the burgundy-wine-red ribbon marker. I am enchanted and completely delighted.

Outside of generic Bible translations I have never experienced a leatherbound Bible like this for young children. Especially not a storybook one and the idea is marvelous. This will make it truly last. It has only been a few ears since we got our original edition of The Jesus Storybook Bible and it's spine is loose from so much use. I doubt that will happen to this one for a long time.

We've been doing our Advent readings each day at dinner using this edition of The Jesus Storybook Bible and I love it. Sitting at the table holding it up and reading aloud it feels great in my hands. I couldn't recommend it any higher praise than pure fabulous!

This leatherbound edition comes in a box sleeve that I have not decided to keep or not yet. Oddly it is not the labeled spine that would show, but the gold edge in the way the box in designed. however the box does have the illustrations we have come to know with the original edition's cover.

Disappointed with theological inaccuracies and tone
By J Watson
We were excited to receive a copy of this book as a gift as I had read and heard rave reviews from numerous places and people I trust. We read through it cover to cover on a nightly basis (1 story a night) with our 2.5 year old and we will not be reading it again. I wanted to write a review here because I wish I had known more about the book before we read it, so I'm hoping this review will help others get a balanced perspective.

I want to preface this by saying that much of the Jesus Storybook Bible is very well done. Many of the reasons we won't be reading it again are preferential more than theological--the tone and style are not what we're looking for, but many may love it. However, as we read through the book with my son, we ran across some issues that cemented our discontent, and many of them were things we consider non-negotiable issues. While a book for kids is obviously not going to be a thorough or completely accurate translation of biblical texts, we feel very strongly that we don't want to be teaching anything now (explicitly or otherwise) that we will have to "unteach" later. This goes for tone, details, attitudes and big concepts alike. That said, here are a few of our thoughts.

I'll start by mentioning a few things I really liked about the Jesus Storybook Bible (JSB). I thought the whimsical style really suited both the creation narrative and the description of Revelation. It also worked well for many of the Old Testament stories (Tower of Babel, Noah & the flood, Jonah). I appreciate the emphasis on Christ as the center of God's plan and love the idea of "every story whispering His name" (the tag-line for the book). That being said, we really felt that the authors overstepped and added to or changed parts of scripture in a way that could be genuinely harmful to our children's developing spiritual lives and understanding. I'll give a few bullet points that stand out to me with an example of each.

- The result of the fall. The JSB says that because of the fall, a terrible lie came into the world: "God doesn't love me." This theme runs throughout many of the stories. Now, of course doubting God's love is part of the results of the fall, but to sum it up that way really doesn't get to the heart of our culpability and need for forgiveness. We are broken, but we are also responsible. We are not just victims of the fall, we are perpetrators, and I think that is incredibly important for children to understand.

- The addition of unnecessary and unbiblical details. In almost every story, the JSB has embellishments that stray from the text. While that's somewhat understandable to make it accessible to little ones, we really felt they stepped over the line and described scenes that were not only not in scripture but could easily sway the understanding of a biblical character's character and personality.

o Example: In the story of God's command to Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, after God stops Abraham, there is this paragraph:

"Abraham felt his heart leap with joy. He unbound Isaac and folded him in his arms. Great sobs shook the old man's whole body. Scalding tears filled his eyes. And for a long time, they stayed there like that, in each other's arms...."

I am uncomfortable with that not because it isn't true, but because I have no idea if that's what happened. It's highly specific and it feels wrong to me to tell my kids a Bible story that way. There's nothing wrong with saying Abraham was overjoyed, relieved, and rejoiced, but being so specific feels eerily of untruth to me.

- The addition of details that are ANTI-biblical. I know that sounds very harsh, but I mean to make a distinction between details that we can't know, like my point above, and details that we know are untrue, if relatively "harmless."

o Example: In the story of Jacob working for Laban to earn Rachel's hand:

"One day, Laban said, `Jacob, I've decided to pay you for your work. What do you want?' A sudden thought struck him. `How about one of my daughters?'"

You can read Gen. 29 to see that this is not an accurate account at all. Jacob is the one who suggests marriage to one of Laban's daughters. In fact, the JSB's version of the story is framed as Rachel being the "popular girl" and Leah the girl that "nobody wanted," while in scripture the only thing to suggest this is a description of Rachel as beautiful and Leah as plain. Not only do we not want to introduce the "pretty popular" versus "ugly boring" dichotomy any earlier than it will present itself, this belies the nature of the passage and hoists far too much modern cynicism onto the story. Is it harmful to change those little details? Maybe not, but again, it makes us very uncomfortable. We would much rather err on the side of caution (and in this case, the side of scripture).

- Irreverence. This is my #1 problem with this text. It's one thing to simplify language and large theological concepts, but unfortunately the whimsy of the language in the JSB often seems to turn into cheek and strays far from the holiness and awe found in the biblical narrative.

o Example: The description of Gabriel's visit to Mary. In scripture, we see Mary as receptive, in awe of the honor bestowed upon her, and both reverent and submissive. The JSB says Mary was "minding her own business" and when the angel told her she was chosen by God, she "looked over her shoulder to see if he was talking to somebody else." I know to some people these additions would feel like no big deal, but we want our children to grow up with an abiding sense of awe at God's presence and work. This was not just some casual encounter! And Mary, as seen in scripture, didn't treat it that way.
When we speak of these incredible moments when God reached into history, I want my children hear them described with reverence and appropriate fear, not nonchalance. Yes, the words and ideas need to be simple enough to be accessible to children, but simplicity and reverence are not only compatible, but according to Christ they require one another.

Alongside this point, we were really disappointed in the immature and petty attitudes portrayed in many of the characters. It seemed that in the JSB, heroes of the faith were always arguing, being petty and rude, and rarely (if ever) maturing throughout their stories. The book seemed to have a very black and white view of its characters. Jesus is good. Everyone else is vicious and just doesn't get it. Sure, we as humans often don't get it. But if I'm going to tell my children that I want them to model their lives after the great men and women in the Bible, I want them to see and hear about those who were changed by their encounters with Christ and lived incredible, selfless lives. I do NOT want them modeling their lives after the men and women in the JSB.

I think the real tipping point for us was the story of the Last Supper. The JSB messed with that particular story so much we almost quit reading in the middle of it. Here are the highlights of the problems we saw:

o The JSB story begins with the disciples arguing over not wanting to wash each other's feet. This is totally inaccurate--See John 13. Not only was there no arguing, but they never would have expected one of them (or Jesus) to do it. It was a servant's job. Jesus brought it up by beginning to serve them, not in the midst of an argument.

o The JSB includes Peter's refusal of Jesus' washing and Jesus' comment that if he did not wash him, Peter could have no part with him. Peter's response of "then wash all of me!" is included, but not Jesus' gentle reminder that only his feet needed washing. In our minds, this is very incomplete. If they did not want to include the more difficult theology of Jesus' second answer, they shouldn't have included Peter's second comment either.

o The JSB changes Christ's words during the Last Supper, having him say, "My body is like this bread. It will break." There are so many things wrong with this interpretation, especially if you do not adhere to the bread and wine as a "mere symbol." The emphasis is on the bread, not Christ's body. Also, the JSB flips the metaphor around and says, "This cup of wine is like my blood." The power in the statements of Christ in the Last Supper is in their simplicity, and we are hard pressed to think of a good reason to change the simple and accurate translation of "This is my body" and "This is my blood." Even if you believe they are simply a metaphor and don't want to confuse (often literal) children, the JSB is liberal with metaphors elsewhere. These essential words of Christ seem an obvious place to keep scriptural integrity.

o The JSB also changes Jesus' specific command to celebrate the Lord's Supper ("Do this in remembrance of me") into a general heaven-ward thought when we consume food & drink (From the JSB: "So whenever you eat and drink, remember... I've rescued you!"). I don't think any Orthodox Christian would see this as an accurate representation of Christ's expectation.

So, I've written a lot of criticism here, and I hope it will be taken as it is intended. It helped us immensely to have to write all of this down. Some points on which I thought I had legitimate concerns, I discovered were not theological at all and I was forced to reevaluate. Others I became even more convinced that this is not the biblical standard I want to hold up for my children. If these were Richard Scarey stories or Curious George, I could look at my kids and say, "That's not right, is it?" But when we sit down and say we're going to learn about Jesus and His story, I want to be as accurate, reverent and choosy as I can be, because there is a lot at stake. Those are our (very long) 2 cents. Please take them with a grain of salt.

A Must Buy for every age!
By Michelle
This isn't just for kids - great bible for adults to read as well. I loved this bible and recommend that everyone should read it and buy it for all of their families and friends!

The Deluxe Edition is a complete package of the reading on CDs and a read-along book. And, since we've put the girls to bed and down for naps with books on CDs since they were old enough to hold the book, I knew this set would be right up their alley. I must admit that when I received the book, just before Christmas, I set Emma up with the book and CD's and saved my reading with her for something that she couldn't do on her own. However, when I picked the book up to review, I decided that it was something that we needed to read together.

It is a nice bonus that the reader is David Suchet, one of Great Britain's most distinguished actors, best known for playing Agatha Christie's super-sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Since Emma finds a British accent as one of the upmost pleasurable things in life (apparently all princesses have British accents), she was hooked upon hearing the first lines of the introduction..

Illustrated by award winning, Jago, the illustrations are whimsical interpretations that serve to help bring the stories alive. While I know that illustrations are an important part of wrapping children into a book, personally, I am typically drawn to the words without paying much attention to the illustrations. However, Jago's illustrations are so truly captivating and compliment the story so well, that I found myself reading the story through the pictures before I even began reading the words. I also found myself flipping back through to admire his artwork (something I do very rarely).

Those elements alone are worth the cost of the book. But, most surprisingly, I found the most beautiful description of the way that I want my children to view the Bible, right within the first pages of the book.

It's taken all of my will power not to write the whole introduction right here and now. But, please allow me to share just a couple of pieces in which Sally Lloyd-Jones seemed to have looked straight into my heart and somehow put the passion that I have for my children to know God as a loving and compassionate father into words that I had not yet found.

Sally Lloyd-Jones writes:
"The Bible isn't mainly about you and what you should be doing. It's about God and what he has done."

"Now, some people think the Bible is a book of rules, telling you what you should and shouldn't do. The Bible certainly does have some rules in it. They show you how life works best. But the Bible isn't mainly about you and what you should be doing. It's about God and what he has done.

Other people think the Bible is a book of heroes, showing you people you should copy. The Bible does have some heroes in it, but (as you'll soon find out) most of the people in the Bible aren't heroes at all. They make some big mistakes (sometimes on purpose), they get afraid and run away. At times, they're downright mean.

No, the Bible isn't a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. It's an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It's a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne-everything-to rescues the ones he loves. It's like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life".

I completely agree with Dr. Tim Keller's endorsement of the book below:

"I would urge not just families with young children to get this book, but every Christian--from pew warmers, to ministry leaders, seminarians and even theologians! Sally Lloyd-Jones has captured the heart of what it means to find Christ in all the scriptures, and has made clear even to little children that all God's revelation has been about Jesus from the beginning--a truth not all that commonly recognized even among the very learned." -- Dr. Tim Keller, Redeemer, NY, NY

Overall, great bible for all ages!

A Socialist View of Sexuality and Liberation?
By David Thorstad
The cover photo on Sherry Wolf's book shows a protest rally with a woman holding a highlighted rainbow flag. Radical gay and lesbian activists, one assumes. Look closely, though, and you'll see that the woman is sporting a Hillary for president button. The contrast seems odd for a book on socialism. But maybe not. The idea that the Democratic Party can be pressured into doing the right thing for oppressed groups has grown stronger as the influence of the left has diminished. This mix of radicalism and reformism pervades the book.
Wolf writes in a readable style, and her book offers a useful overview of the American gay movement's history of the past few decades, as well as some insights into its politics. But despite the book's strengths, it is riddled with errors and gives short shrift to the third element of her subtitle: theory.
A fundamental problem is her use of the LGBT acronym. As she notes, "desiring to be all-inclusive and readable" is a difficult task. To her credit, she rejects the "queer" label because of its negative historical baggage, but her decision to lump together "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people" has its own problems. For one thing, there is no such thing as "LGBT people," and it muddles differences of identity and oppression. I doubt there even is a "theory of LGBT liberation"--beyond, perhaps, asserting that all oppressed groups will be better off under socialism.
She begins with an examination of "the roots of LGBT oppression." But here already she stumbles, and not only because of her alphabet soup of categories. "The oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people has not always existed," she writes, "and neither have LGBT people as a distinct sector of the population." Indeed! But "LGBT" people (or "GLBT" or "LGBTQQIAA" or other bizarre acronyms) do not constitute a "distinct sector" today either, and she is wrong to trace the "oppression of all sexual minorities" solely to "modern capitalism." The roots of sexual oppression in the West go back much earlier in class society. Homosexual oppression arose with the Holiness Code of Leviticus and is part of the Judeo-Christian tradition, compounded by the Anglo-Saxon legal heritage. Wolf ignores this history of the taboo on (male) homosexuality, or its relevance for today. (She doesn't bother with cross-cultural or anthropological studies that might complicate her view.) She does recognize that it is "tied to" the nuclear family (a relatively recent institution) under capitalism, and says that "socialists fight for a world in which sexuality is a purely personal matter, without legal or material restrictions of any sort."
But that last point is weakened by her failure to discuss the role that repression of youth sexuality (e.g., age-of-consent laws) plays in the repression of homosexual behavior. Wolf recycles bourgeois prejudice when it comes to intergenerational love, as her comments on nineteenth-century German labor leader Johann Baptiste von Schweitzer show. She refers to him as a "convicted pederast, as Engels called him--that is, a man who seduces boys." But by inserting "seduction" into her novel definition of pederasty (a sexual relationship between a man and an adolescent youth), she repeats the foolish notion that a boy under the magical age of consent (whatever it happens to be) is by definition incapable of consenting to sex with a man: "Whatever the wrongs of age-of-consent legislation that carry over into the modern era [she mentions no `wrongs'], it should stand as a basic socialist principle that sex between two people must be consensual. It is incompatible for genuine consent devoid of the inequality of power to be given by a child to a man of thirty."
But what is Wolf's definition of a "child"? What does sexual freedom mean for youth? Did consensual sex with a teenager in nineteenth-century Germany merit punishment? Wolf fails to mention the more enlightened view of Schweitzer's colleague, labor leader Ferdinand Lassalle, who said: "What Schweitzer did isn't pretty, but I hardly look upon it as a crime.... In the long run, sexual activity is a matter of taste and ought to be left up to each person, so long as he doesn't encroach upon someone else's interests." Wolf later notes that the Soviet criminal code of 1922 omitted mention of sodomy, incest, and age-of-consent laws: "`Sexual maturity' was to be determined on a case-by-case basis according to medical opinion." So, does she favor abolishing age of consent in the law? Her failure to address such questions leaves in place the sexual status quo for young people. Her final chapter would have been more accurately titled "Sexual Liberation for Some!" (not "All").
She regards the hot-button issues of the day--letting same-sexers serve openly in the military and gay marriage--as goals socialists should fight for. While she concedes that "hostility to the military is certainly understandable," she thinks it is more important to critique the federal government's "hiring practices," even if the result is to strengthen the imperial military. She seems worried that "if LGBT people are eventually deemed qualified to kill or be killed for the empire, then other legal and social restrictions would only be amplified." Her concerns already seem out of date. Top officials are pushing for repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" because the policy hampers the war machine at a time when it needs all the bodies it can get. And, thanks to Obama (whose election Wolf considers a "victory"--for whom she doesn't say), the Pentagon has the biggest war budget in history to pay for its aggression. Again, this seems like reformism posing as radicalism.
She describes at length the discrimination faced by same-sex couples (though not by transsexuals, whose interests hardly coincide with those of gays who want to get married since transsexuals already can), but has nothing to say about discrimination against singles, or about the many downsides of marriage (e.g., legal responsibility for a spouse's credit card debts, or the messiness and expense of divorce and its often traumatic effects on any children involved). In an assertion that would have Frederick Engels turning over in his grave, she argues that marriage "is part of the class struggle." Getting the state out of the marriage business and making marriage a purely private and/or religious affair would be a step toward genuine equality, but Wolf does not examine such an approach. She mentions civil unions only to denigrate them. She thinks her support for marriage is more radical than the critique of "queer theorists": "in their opposition to civil rights struggles to `normalize' and `assimilate' LGBT people into wider society by fighting for reforms such as same-sex marriage or equal employment rights, queer theorists' fundamental conservatism is exposed." Isn't this the pot calling the kettle black?
Her discussion of postmodernism (pp. 168ff.; not listed in the Index) is good, as is her critique of identity politics, as far as it goes. She is right to criticize the "sexual binary" in gay gene studies, and examines well the fluidity of same-sex practices and identity. She makes the cogent point that "Identity politics activists and scholars' adherence to identity-based power blocs is tantamount to a rejection of the notion that class is a fundamental divide in society, thus they sever the link between exploitation and oppression." And: "The legacy of identity politics organizing in the United States often lends itself to an unproductive `oppression Olympics' [a neat term] in which different groups compete, in a sense, for which one is lowest on the totem pole. It seems a politically useless endeavor, as it only mirrors the ideological framework of the dominant class in whose interest these divisions persist." But her own use of "LGBT people" is itself an example of politically correct identity politics, as is her taking of identity rather than sexual behavior as her starting point, and the reform agenda she supports has less to do with Marxism than with gay assimilation into the capitalist status quo.
Even her discussion of gay bashing focuses on identity, not on the fear of homosexuality that leads to it. Homoerotic attraction is universal, and the mostly young males who bash are acting out of fear of their own homoerotic impulses. But, with a "workerist" twist, Wolf sees this in terms of identity: "a minority of heterosexuals carry out acts of bigotry against LGBT people because, in addition to the competition under capitalism that exists between bosses for profits, there is competition among workers as well, for jobs, housing, education, etc." Fear of homosexuality is reduced to fear of joblessness: "atomized and isolated, workers at times express their rage by turning against one another rather than the system and the class that exploits and oppresses them." It's unclear how this analysis would explain, say, the murder of Matthew Shepard.
The factual errors and instances of sloppy citation are too numerous to list, but here are a few:
Marx and Engels were not "socialism's founders" (p. 9). The most detailed and free vision of sexuality under socialism was offered by the earlier utopian socialist Charles Fourier, whose Harmony provided for all varieties of sexual behavior, and whose writings on sexual freedom are far in advance of those of most Marxists. But Wolf does not mention Fourier.
Pederasts are defined as "homosexual pedophiles" (p. 77). Pederasts are men attracted to pubescent and postpubescent males; pedophiles are attracted to prepubescents. Here, Wolf is regurgitating bourgeois disiniformation.
U.S. leftist groups "defended Cuba's earlier record of abuse against sexual minorities or simply ignored it" (p. 106). This distortion seems designed to show Wolf's International Socialist Organization (ISO) in a favorable light compared to other leftist groups. While it is true that Maoists and the Communist Party are guilty as charged, the blanket statement is false. I myself gave a forum in New York for the Socialist Workers Party in the early 1970s (reported in the Village Voice) condemning the Cuban persecution of Heberto Padilla and the 1971 Cuban Cultural Congress's condemnation of homosexuality as a "social pathology," as well as the internment of homosexuals in the 1960s.
The internal debates in the SWP on gay liberation lasted nine years (1970-79), not three (p. 108).
Homosexuality per se was never outlawed in the United States (p. 117); only certain acts were illegal.
GAA's name was Gay Activists (not Activist) Alliance (pp. 129, 142, 325).
Neither edition of Donn Teal's The Gay Militants (she omits The from the title) says that the SWP was perceived by the Gay Liberation Front to be "notorious Puritans" (the quote, from Bob Martin of the youth committee of NACHO, not GLF, says nothing about the SWP: "Revolutionaries are notorious Puritans and so many radicals are uptight about their own sexual orientation"), nor were Maoists the "dominant leftist influence" in the GLF (p. 132).
The Red Butterfly cell was not formed by "Maoist gays" (p. 136).
She discusses how radical lesbians challenged NOW's early hostility to lesbianism (p. 136), but fails to mention the notorious antigay, antimale resolution adopted at NOW's October 1980 convention at the behest of its Lesbian Rights Committee, and never rescinded, condemning pederasty, public sex, sadomasochism, prostitution, and pornography.
GRID stood for Gay-Related Immune Deficiency, not "Gay-Related Infectious Disease" (pp. 164, 326).
Mattachine was not the first U.S. gay organization (p. 244).
The IWW was the Industrial (not International) Workers of the World (p. 244).
There are also numerous errors in the identification of sources in the notes. In some cases, the author given is wrong (I was the editor of Gay Liberation and Socialism, for example, not Forgione and Hill [pp. 292, 295]), and 300 (not 20) copies were published, as is clearly stated in the copy she says was lent to her by David Whitehouse (who bought his copy from me).
Wolf often cites as her source books by supporters of the ISO (which published her book and to which she belongs) when the information originally appeared elsewhere (e.g., in John Lauritsen's and my The Early Homosexual Rights Movement (1864-1935)). This happens enough to suggest that it is intentional.
The book's architecture is sloppy. Frequently, the first time a work is cited, only a short title and the author's last name are given, so complete publication information is not provided anywhere.
The "Selected Readings" is not alphabetized; works are listed haphazardly.
At 5 X 7 inches, Wolf's book is compact and easy to hold. But despite her good intentions, and her excellent, if sometimes cursory, treatment of subjects like postmodernism and poststructuralism, Foucault, identity politics, and "queer," her book is not always a reliable guide to history, and fails to make a convincing case for socialism as the way forward for sexual minorities.

Funny, engaging and politically sharp
By Karen H
Funny, engaging and politically sharp, Sexuality and Socialism is a book I'd recommend to scholars and activists alike. I've studied and taught queer theory and history over the years and found this book to be a gem, not only for my students, but myself. Wolf's prose are straight-forward and witty, her take-no-prisoners style of writing when it comes to politically assessing both liberals and the Left is refreshing and unique in this field.

I love that Wolf reexamines the history of the Left and sexuality with a critical eye, but also sets the record straight on a number of anti-Left myths that are ubiquitous. Also, her chapters critiquing queer theory and biological determinism are insightful and break new ground in a full-length book, bringing certain arguments out of obscure journals and writing about theory in ways that are accessible to all.

I heard Wolf speak in 2010 and thought she was witty and sharp, she spoke with scant notes for 40 minutes and was one of the best lecturers I've ever heard. I bought her book that evening and finished it in a couple of days. But it's the kind of book I've referenced in arguments and writing ever since. You will love this book, even if you're just curious about sexual liberation and the history of how our society got so screwed up on this issue.

Rating: Top Shelf Review from Guest Bartender, Hayley.

Guest Bartender Hayley also reviewed Freeing Alex & Eternally Alex

OMG. I honestly thought I loved Freeing Alex, but when I started reading Loving Alex, I was hooked from the first page. This storyline continues where book 1 ended, but this shows a stronger willed, determined Alex with a white knight in shining armor, James at her side. Every women needs a man like James (tall, dark and handsome).
Loving Alex introduces us to Alex's dad and is very family oriented. They have her back, giving her the extra strength she needs.
There are twists in this book that I didn't see coming, but add strength to the book and its a happy feeling to see the difference from Freeing Alex to Loving Alex.
The things James can do with Strawberries are truly amazing and so loving, you just want the book to go on and continue forever. I honestly can't wait for book 3, Eternally Alex, to see what happens next.
My drink of choice in this book has got to stay with Champagne and strawberries but, like the Arconi Angels, I will add the strawberry bellini :-)

Spectacular Sequel
By Jacqueline Noir
Loving Alex is the sequel to Freeing Alex by Sarah Elizabeth Ashley. Ashley does a great job transitioning into this second book which starts off right where the first ended. Alex Drake continues to make a space in our hearts and learns how to fight. Empowerment and change seems to be the energy layered into Alex and her journey in this story. There were some moments where I questioned what she was doing but then realized I would probably do the same in her shoes. Sarah Elizabeth Ashley has created characters and a story that will leave a lasting impression. In addition to memorable Alex, there is James, who is so amazingly hot there are not enough words to describe how great he is! James made me want eat strawberries and drink champagne every night just to feel like I am a part of their romance.
Don’t think for a second this is just a love story, there is suspense and are twists that will leave you shocked. If you have not added this author to your Goodreads page, do so now, you will not want to miss anything she puts out.

Loving Alex
By Colfel
Excellent follow up to Freeing Alex! Again Sarah has nailed the feeling, emotions and mindset of a DV survivor. I absolutely loved James and his protectiveness! James is too good to be true and is perfect for Alex! This story has twists and turns that weren't expected. The book drew me in completely as all of these characters and plots are very realistic. There were still typos and grammatical errors that detracted from the story and that is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. I would recommend this book and can't wait for the next in the series.

A delightful revisit to the show
By Alicia Sorban
Never knew this existed...a fun read and some fascinating facts. If you are a B5 fan, this is a real treat. I've quoted the spoo and flarn lines from the show to a few folk.

The Real Story Behind the Cookbook
By Stephen C. Smith
Wow, I'm amazed to find a listing ... I was the free-lance writer hired to write the book. Contrary to what I've read here and elsewhere, I'm definitely not British. But I did watch a lot of Monty Python to get the attitude for the fictional author, Emerson Briggs-Wallace, who is very loosely based on John Cleese's Basil Fawlty character.

Here's how the idea for the book came up ... The folks in WB Licensing were sitting around trying to come up with ideas for B5-related products to license, as B5 was taking off in the ratings and becoming somewhat of a hot property. They'd recently licensed a cookbook based on "Friends," so someone jokingly added a B5 cookbook to their list of ideas.

To their shock and horror, someone actually showed an interest, a U.K. publisher called Boxtree.

I'd written for other B5 licensees, and had a good working relationship with B5 creator Joe Straczynski, so the Licensing folk gave me a call to ask if I could write it.

"The only way it will work," I said, "is if we go over the top."

While I knew B5, I didn't know squat about cooking. WB hired a "food consultant" who designs recipes for food chains. She knew cooking, but didn't know squat about B5.

So we began by my going through all the aired episodes to date. I compiled a clip video with any scenes I could find showing or referring to food, e.g. the infamous flarn dinner prepared by Lennier for Sheridan and Delenn, and Garibaldi talking about his pop's bagna cauda. I gave her the dishes, both human and alien, to concoct, while I went off to write the rest of the book.

I decided that this book was to be firmly rooted in the B5 universe. I chose late third season, in the lull before the alliance defeats the Shadows who then send Anne Sheridan to B5. (You might recall the recently enlightened G'Kar was a bit loopy around that time, so I wrote him that way.)

We'd seen Fresh Air, the true five-star restaurant at the end of the universe, so I came up with the idea of Emerson Briggs-Wallace, a rather arrogant, pompous gossipmonger who owned the joint. (As I said, he's loosely based on Basil Fawlty.) Viewing himself as a man of importance on the station yet clueless that he's generally disliked by the command staff, he approaches Sheridan with the idea for the cookbook, who as a practical joke sends him off to see Ivanova and the other characters in the book. (The joke is lost on poor Emerson, but the others suspect they've been set up.)

If you pay close attention, you'll find some cross-references in the book. For example, G'Kar quotes a "wise Human who said: Stuff it." If you look at Garibaldi's recipe for Cannelloni, he writes, "Just prepare your filling, and stuff it."

When the recipes came back, I came up with alien names for some of the ingredients. If you look throughout the book, you'll find the alien names are totally consistent. Beeba (olive) oil is beeba (olive) oil anywhere it's listed as an ingredient.

The food consultant worked with WB Licensing to take the photos of the prepared dishes. I helped pull the slides and screen-grabs taken from the episodes you see in the book.

Is the book canon? Obviously, anything that came from the show is canon. But the stuff I made up? If you watch the fifth season episode "A View from the Gallery," there's a scene where the maintenance workers Bo and Mac are waiting out an alien attack in a shelter. You'll see one of them pick up a book lying on the floor, flip through it, and toss it aside. That book is a mockup of "Dining on Babylon 5" which hadn't been published at the time of filming.

I didn't know Joe was going to do that, and only found out when the episode aired. (I think I peed all over the floor when I saw it ...) So far as I'm concerned, if it airs on the show then it's canon. If you assume the book was published in late third season, then by the middle of the fifth season it would make sense that this book made the rounds for its semi-tabloid nature and was quickly tossed aside. Finding it lying about in an air raid shelter seems entirely appropriate.

Joe did tweak the spoo recipes, because he had a reference to it in an upcoming episode, so he wanted to be sure the book was consistent.

The Boxtree license only allowed the book to be published in the U.K. and I think a couple other European countries. Del Rey, the U.S. publisher with the rights to the B5 novels, showed no interest at all in the cookbook, which is why it never surfaced here in the States. Any copies in the U.S. were shipped from the U.K.

It's a shame it never got a reprint, here or there, because it's a fairly unique, if not bizarre, piece of B5 spinoff merchandise. I'm still surprised it was ever published in the first place -- but then B5 always had its unique bizarre sense of humor, so I guess the cookbook fits in just fine.

You know what I hate more than anything about cook books that tag a name of some sci-fi show? The fact that many of them are in no way related to the source material. They are just relatively simple and common recipes with some science fiction reference tagged on it (hear that Star Wars Cookbook?).

Okay no more ranting. Dining on Babylon 5 is much more than that. What you have are "human" equivalent of actual dishes seen and heard about on the Babylon 5 series. Not only that but you also get some very interesting background information on various alien foods you hear on the show like spoo and the origins of the Jovian Sunspot.

First lets talk about the recipes, which I'm sure most cook book owners want to know about. The book is broken down into different sections, done by a character in the show who is sharing their recipe. Mollari, G'Kar, Lenier, Garibaldi, and Ivanova. Here's a quick breakdown:

Ivanova's section really only deals mostly with russian quisine and isn't any different than what you would get anywhere else. The exception to that is the drink, Jovian Sunspot. I bet you didn't know that was a human drink? Well the book answers that for you.

Garibaldi's section is a mix of American/Italian quisine and a little bit of alien reference. You get to see the coveted Bagna Cauda recipe on this one. I think this section also has an interesting alien recipe referred to as "Tubers"

Lennier's section has flarn is the most notable recipe. What's cool about the alien recipes is they give the actual alien name for the food and then the "human" equivalent.

G'Kar's section has Breen, which we all know as Swedish Meatballs. I don't have the book in front of me so I can't remember the other recipes aside from a "Narn" version of Spoo.

Mollari's section has the most alcoholic drinks in it. Surprised? Now you can make a home-grown version of Hot Jala and Brivari. Obviously not as strong, but oh well. There is a Centauri recipe for Spoo, which is of course very different from the Narn and a few other dishes that sounded tasty by looking at the ingredients (very Italian by way of the sauces).

So the recipes are fun. Now for the B5 fans you also get some background info on stuff like what spoo actually is, the history behind Garibaldi's favorite restaurant chain (Artereal Blockage or something like that), Centauri ceremonies and the temprement of some indigenous fish they hunt, and more. Some of the information is just culled from various episodes so nothing new there. However there is enough new information to make this an enjoyable addition for the die-hard fan.

This book was published in England. The master chef/narrator definitely has that slant in the writing style, which is all the cooler when you find out it's an American writer (thanks Steve for clarifying that). When the writer emulates the other B5 characters that british slant is gone though. It's like reading dialog straight from Londo, Garibaldi, etc. The only difference is the way the recipes are written tend to be all the same (with a few humourous exceptions).

I guess some of you will be wondering if this book is "canon". While I haven't seen any definite yes from JMS he has all but done so when talking about it. JMS was quoted saying -

"I had mainly just editorial input into it, Steve wrote the thing. It's actually a lot of fun, and the illustrations are gorgeous." (JUL.1.1998)

"Basically, I just think it'll be a hoot. The recipes are real, with substitutions if you can't get the real thing from offworld caterers, and it's set right in the B5 universe, as if it were written in that time period, with all the usual Chef attitude that goes into it." (OCT.22.1997)

That's good enough for me. Dining on Babylon 5 is a great little collectors item. Yeah... it's a collectors item. It was only made in England and in limited quantities at that. Consider yourself lucky if you find one. I guess buying it at collector's prices will depend on if you like what you hear enough to pay whatever is being offered. I got mine for around $35 and it was a steal.
