From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Hazel and Augustus need to move over because Batman and Robyn are about to take their place in the annals of YA literary romantic couples. The two teens meet in a group setting for those afflicted by obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Adam Ross, aka Batman, has severe OCD that is debilitating at times. He is intimidated when he joins a weekly group because most of the members are a bit older than him; there is also a girl who he finds irresistible. Each group member takes on a superhero persona for sessions at the urging of their psychologist. Adam chooses Batman, and is floored when his crush Robyn chooses Robin in order to be his sidekick. Adam has a knack for helping others who struggle with their own issues, including his half-brother, Sweetie, who has regular meltdowns; his mother, who is a hoarder; and his best friend, Ben, who has a weight problem. Unfortunately, he is so consumed with his own counting, tapping, and difficulties entering thresholds that he does not realize his gifts. Through Adam, Toten examines the trials and tribulations of OCD head on, but Adam also deals with the usual teenage problems of love, friendships, school, and divorced parents. Readers will relate to Adam's anxieties and root for him as his relationship with Robyn develops. VERDICT This is a definite next-read for teens who loved John Green's The Fault in Our Stars (Dutton, 2012) and Cammie McGovern's Say What You Will (HarperCollins, 2014).—Elizabeth Kahn, Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy, Jefferson, LA

A book that succeeds on numerous levels
By John Rogers ClarkIV
Navigating the teen years is challenging even when everything in your life is good, but when endless things jump out to bite you, it becomes a scary minefield. This is what life is like for Adam Ross who has obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) so severe that it has built a giant all between him and everyone except his mom and step brother Sweetie. That's because they have their own demons. Mom is a hoarder and barely hanging on to the facade that she's a successful nurse at a local hospital. Sweetie loves Adam, or Batman, his super hero persona adopted in his OCD outpatient group. Adam is the only person who can calm Sweetie when he starts to escalate due to his own mental illness.
When Robyn Plummer joins the group after being discharged from a residential treatment program, Adam falls for her very fast and very hard. She makes him begin to think about the possibility of something better than letting his mental and physical rituals rule every moment of his life. He starts by finally involving himself in group, getting everyone to adopt a super hero alter identity and then encouraging everyone to walk down the stairs instead of taking the elevator. He even gets everyone to accompany him on a field trip after group to the Catholic church where he was an altar boy before his illness grew so strong he stopped going.
Everything Adam does to break out of his own head, he does for Robyn and it not only helps her get a lot better, it has positive effects on other members of the group. Unfortunately, no matter how much his efforts help everyone else, Adam can't stop his own rituals from escalating, so much so that he fears he might even be detrimental to Robyn's emotional health.
How they navigate the doubly tricky seas of illness and teen romance, how he deals with his mom's increasingly bizarre behavior and what happens when he finds himself facing a giant crisis that's beyond his ability to hide, make for a sometimes painful, but always gripping read.
This book succeeds on a number of levels. It's a great offbeat teen romance, it makes each member of the OCD group seem very real and human, it makes the agony of severe OCD rituals understandable for anyone unfamiliar with the illness and it does a great job of portraying the unique stresses of blended families when there are huge secrets that everyone tiptoes around.
I liked the ending and strongly suggest anyone reading the book read the interview with the author at the end because it really helps to understand how and why she wrote this story. This is an excellent addition for school and public libraries.

A refreshingly honest and good coming-of-age story
By Little Willow
When Robyn Plummer walks into Room 13B, Adam falls in love at first sight. That may sound like a typical boy-meets-girl story, but, thankfully, this book is anything but cliché. The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten is refreshingly honest, anchored by a memorable main character.

Adam, age 15, is vulnerable, loyal, and sometimes confused by his feelings and by the actions of those around him. He is quieter than some, a little more in his thoughts, which are expressed in limited third-person narrative. His parents are divorced, and he lives with his mom most of the time. She pretends everything is okay while enduring her own private struggle, something Adam tries to both respect and understand. Meanwhile, his father has remarried, and while Adam gets along all right with his dad and his stepmom, the member of that household that undoubtedly enjoys his visits the most is his little brother, Sweetie, who is full of life and full of love. (Kudos to Toten for creating a young, vibrant character that sounds and acts his age. Absolutely spot-on depiction of a preschooler.) It is interesting to note what (and who) each member of Adam's family clings to, and what they're willing to fight for when the going gets tough.

When Adam isn't in one of his two homes, he is usually in Room 13B. Room 13B isn't a classroom; it's a meeting place for a young adult OCD support group. This book gave me what I wanted but didn't get from the TV show Red Band Society: a realistic look at a diverse group of kids who meet due to a medical diagnosis but are not defined by their condition; people who are not the "worst" examples of their condition nor the "best"; characters who are relatable but not cookie-cutter. Each teen has a distinct personality, appearance, and medical history. Their bonding sessions both inside and outside of Room 13B are wonderful. They honestly try to help one another rather than sabotage or one-up each other. When Chuck, the friendly, caring doctor who oversees the group, asks the kids to adopt nom de guerres, almost all of them select superhero names. Robyn picks Robin, prompting Adam to immediately declare himself Batman.

Adam is determined to win Robyn's heart. He has never been in love before, never had a girlfriend, but he falls head over heels for Robyn. He is not simply on a quest for love, but actually fascinated by this specific girl. As the story continues, their friendship develops and deepens. Adam's unconscious need to protect others extends easily to Robyn as he learns more about her, and he tries to be a better person (and taller) so he can be worthy of her. His OCD rituals are both aided and exacerbated by his new goals and his growing awareness that things aren't entirely right at either of his homes.

This book is good. It's solid and it's interesting and it's realistic and it's good. It sheds light on a condition that many people suffer from in silence and shame, and instead of reducing OCD to a punchline or over-dramatizing it, Toten offers believable characters with various rituals and paths to healing. The story moves at an easygoing pace with decent plotting. And most of all, it has a realistic protagonist who is a truly good egg. Adam is dealing with that wonderful, frustrating time when you don't want to be treated like a child but you sometimes wish you were still a carefree little kid, when you want to be independent but you can't drive yet, when you realize your parents are people with their own histories and bad habits and secrets. Just as the author does with his little brother, Toten is also able to capture the appropriate tone for Adam's age and situation. Adam sits at neither hero-with-a-burden character extreme, not wallowing in unbearable darkness and cursing the weight of the world that sits upon his shoulders, nor grinning from ear to ear and boasting that everything's going to be fine. He's simply trying to live his life. As his heart gets broken and mended, so will the hearts of readers.

The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten is a beautifully simple, steady coming-of-age story that I highly recommend, especially to fans of Jordan Sonnenblick and David Levithan.

A Lovable Hero with OCD
By Kathryn
This is a very well-written book that was surprisingly fun, sweet and deep. The story centers around Adam, a fifteen-year-old kid with OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). At the start of the story he's joined a support group for fellow OCD sufferers and immediately falls in love with one of the other teenagers, Robyn. The following love story between the two of them is sweet and I enjoyed watching Robyn and Adam help each other with their own OCD problems.

Adam is a great main character. He's sweet but constantly unsure of himself, full of anxiety and dealing with multiple problems at home (mostly surrounding his mother, who is dealing with her own compulsive hoarding and depression). Adam's OCD escalates as the book goes on, and he is constantly trying to manage it and hide it. I thought the author did a great job describing just how much OCD can affect a person's life and just how time-consuming it can be (describing, for example, how it would often take Adam fifteen minutes just to walk through his front door at home).

I especially loved Adam's support group, which was filled with quirky characters who all form an unlikely friendship. At the beginning of the book each of the members takes on a superhero name, and so we hardly hear their real names. Instead we deal with the likes of people such as Wonder Woman, Thor, Wolverine and Batman. The antics of the OCD support group were always amusing and at the same time provided insight into the different aspects that OCD can have.

This was, overall, a very sweet coming-of-age story for Adam with a nice touch of romance and some great side characters. I really have no complaints about it, and it's a great story for anyone interested in learning about OCD.

This book is mostly useful, but sometimes it is very frustrating when you are doing the exercises because some of them ask you questions about a text and the text cannot answer it. The questions are answerable for the most part, but those few that aren't make homework more annoying than it has to be. It also does not include answers to the practice questions in the grammar sections.

Review
'According to the Muller-Brockmans, a poster 'should inform, stimulate, activate, expound, query, provoke, convince.' While modern posters may not live up to these ambitions, this book certainly does.' (Francesca Gavin, Blueprint) 'Defends poster art against accusations of being easy and accessible by making the point that a mass-communications brief is more difficult to satisfy than the solitary artist's need for self-expression.' (Stephen Bayley, Independent) 'A design classic.' (The Times) 'A fascinating journey through the glory days of that most inescapable method of visual communication...There's arresting imagery on almost every page.' (Independent)

Excellent
By Thomas S. Lowry
This book is mainly a pictorial of 291 poster designs from the very late 1800's up until the late 1960's. There are many great and important examples found in this book, both well and lesser known posters are showcased. Some parts of this book could described as egotistical going into the 50's and 60's as there are many Müller-Brockmann works shown; however, I found this to be quite relevant with Swiss design of that time being so revolutionary. Then again I am a great admirer of his work. Additionally, the writings throughout the book are quite enlightening and are not too heavy to read. The printing quality is great, examples are large, shown in full colour and printed on very nice stock. The creator's name, size, year, type of reproduction, and descriptions of the purpose are included for each poster. One of the pro's to this book was the inclusion of these very brief descriptions. A very good piece of information to include in a design collective as it is essential in order to judge whether or not a piece of design is effective; something a few overrated books on identity could use (e.g. Los Logos).

The Campus Trilogy: Changing Places; Small World; Nice Work, by David Lodge

"A trio of dazzling novels in a comic mode that the author has now made completely his own...a cause for celebration." -The New York Times Book Review

David Lodge's three delightfully sophisticated campus novels, now gathered together in one volume, expose the world of academia at its best-and its worst. In Changing Places, we meet Philip Swallow, British lecturer in English at the University of Rummidge, and the flamboyant American Morris Zapp of Euphoric State University, who participate in a professorial exchange program at the close of the tumultuous sixties. Ten years later in Small World, older but not noticeably wiser, they are let loose on the international conference circuit-along with a memorable and somewhat oversexed cast of dozens. And in Nice Work, the leftist feminist Dr. Robyn Penrose at Rummidge University is assigned to shadow the director of a local engineering firm, sparking a collision of ideologies and lifestyles that seems unlikely to foster anything other than mutual antipathy.

Amazon.com Review
Anyone intrigued by differences between American and British academic institutions will find this an amusing and accurate send-up. David Lodge, portraying two American and British professors who replace one another at their respective institutions, gives greed, pettiness, and pretense full rein.

Review
David Lodge's sharply funny trilogy set in academe toggles between the very American Euphoria State University and the utterly British University of Rummidge. -- Entertainment Weekly

A tale of humiliation...and hilarity
By Glen Engel Cox
I read this on the train to New Jersey and back in January, and I'm sure my fellow passengers were looking at me strangely, because I was snorting and saying, "ha!" Maybe it's just being around academics again, but I found this novel extremely funny, and I probably will search out more Lodge based on it.
The idea is simple: two professors, one at a small college in England, the other at a huge conglomerate in California, switch places for an academic year. The English professor, who is barely scraping by, longs for the materialism of American society; the American professor, on the verge of divorce, is trying to get his wife to see past his infidelities and acknowledge his worth as a husband. But people are people all over, and while both professors undergo quite a bit of culture shock, and cause some culture shock in the academic societies that they become a part of, the real story here is that it is a small world after all (hmm, funny that, but Small World is the name of the sequel to this novel.
One of the best sections of this novel is the depiction of a game called Humiliation, wherein you must name a novel that you have not read, but that you expect everyone else at the table/party to have read. The idea is that by admitting not having read a canonical text (especially among Literature scholars) you will be humiliated. It's the kind of intellectual party game that Seinfeld watchers just can't join in on, because it assumes a sophistication. Either that, or it's just snobbery.
The other thing that raises this story about similar counterparts (including Kingsley Amis' Lucky Jim, which I liked, but not as much as this novel) is the clever way in which it shifts form within the story. For example, section three is done entirely epistolary, while the ending is written in screenplay format. The novel is also self-reflecting, in a wry sort of metafictional way. You know that you're reading a story, and the story knows that you are reading it, but instead of pressing the point as in some of the more aggressive post-modern works, it does some sly winks and nods in the general direction of the reader.

Witty, accurate, compelling ("dated" misses the point)
By Andrew Paxman
As a British graduate student at UC Berkeley, the campus upon which "Euphoric State" is closely modelled, and as a graduate of an English university similar to "Rummidge," which doubles for Birmingham, I can vouch for the accuracy of Lodge's beautifully-wrought satire. I zipped through "Changing Places" in less than a day and can't remember the last time I enjoyed a novel so much. Lodge was a visiting professor from Birmingham who taught at Berkeley in the late 60s (Philip Swallow is thus a kind of alter ego), and thirty-two years after the action takes place, there's much that's still recognizable here. The satire of academic life in England and America hits the bullseye, the characterizations are broad but retain a sympathetic humanity, the drama is compelling and amusingly risqué. There's also a nicely constructed vein of self-referential literariness that emerges on occasion, without being obtrusive. Accusations by some readers that the novel is "dated" miss the point - one might as well say Jane Austen is dated. Yes, the era of campus radicalism and sit-ins has receded into history, but the comparisons Lodge draws between English and U.S. campus life, academic politics and professors are still mostly valid. (Perhaps the biggest difference is that British academics have since come closer to their U.S. counterparts in having to worry about "publish or perish.") It's fascinating to note that many of the minutiae have not changed: British lecturers still give grades like Swallow's ultra-precise B+/B+?+; Berkeley's Telegraph Avenue ("Cable Avenue" in the book) is still a living monument to hippiedom (albeit somewhat commercialized now) and its People's Park ("People's Garden") survives unfenced and enjoyed by the community. Two caveats: readers addicted to neat-and-tidy Hollywood endings may be disappointed; everyone else should take care to read "Changing Places" first, proceed to "Small World," and then go on to "Nice Work."

A very funny novel and a wonderful read
By A Customer
David Lodge's "Changing Places" had me in stitches. It's such a funny book. The prose is highly readable, crisply written and races along so charmingly that it's hard to put it down once you've started. Although Philip Swallow and Morris Zapp are drawn from the two contrasting cultures they symbolise, they are never allowed to degenerate into caricatures. Both are highly real and believable characters, sharing much the same human frailties. While Zapp is unashamedly direct, hollow and crass, Swallow is rather more reserved, diffident, but with the same potential though not the guts for dishonesty. It is only by "changing places" that they become themselves, albeit in a different environment. Even the behaviour of their wives change when subjected to the opposite cultural influences. Admittedly, the setting of the "exchange" in the late 60s (with all the references to student protests and pot smoking in university campuses) has tended to date the book a bit. But who cares, when you derive such enormous pleasure, laughter and fun from reading what must seem like a novel for the ages. I can see thousands reading it 50 years into the new millenium.

I Ching: Walking your path, creating your future, by Hilary Barrett

I-Ching has been in continuous use for around 3,000 years. The Chinese Zhou people developed this Book of Changes. The I-Ching is an ancient Chinese oracle, a proven tool of divination that can help readers foresee the future. It is a complete guide to change: understanding it, moving with it, creating it. It describes change that is transformative and seasonal, global and personal, incremental and revolutionary. It tells stories of great historical change, and it sketches tiny vignettes of everyday life—marrying, surviving an illness, repairing a well.

The beautifully designed pages of this book, along with its striking flexibound cover will appeal to the reference and gift markets. This manual includes all 64 hexagrams with key questions delineating the main themes, and step-by-step instructions on how to cast a hexagram, with three coins or with yarrow stalks or beads. The book also offers simple techniques for discovering the personal meaning of the answers you receive and suggests ways to carry your readings into daily life.

This attractive, practical I Ching for divination pays homage to the original text while supporting the modern user with lucid explanations and guidelines for interpreting the oracle.

I Ching: Walking your path, creating your future (paperback)
By Rand Noël
Let me begin by saying that I have known Hilary Barrett for going on eight years now, and this review will be slightly prejudiced in her favor; Not because I know she'll read the review but because her reputation precedes her publication. The book itself is an excellent quality book and gives the I Ching (Yijing) student a wonderful insight into the machinations of this ancient oracle.
What impressed me, was Hilary's ability to put into everyday English what Scholars from Ancient China and throughout time all over the world have debated and published and re-published for most of the History of Mankind. The 'Yi' is considered by most to be one of the oldest written 'anything' in the world. Surviving massive book burnings, political upheavals and just time itself, Ms. Barrett, like the original, has kept it short and to the point without compromising philosophical integrity, or mystical insight. In this day and age of mass media and marketing it's a pleasure to know that some still have the ability to convey to the reader the beauty of the work. I am sure the (In)spiration for much of her work was none other that the message of the work itself "talking to her' and for this I am grateful that one more generation may have the ability to understand that magical world of Oracles and the I Ching that have guided ordinary people and Emperors alike throughout the ages.

I Ching- For Any Level of Practitioner
By Appalachiacat
Not being a writer, it will be difficult to do this book proper justice; but here goes....
"I Ching; Walking Your Path, Creating Your Future" is easy to use and is full of wisdom, virtue and insight. If one is a beginner to the Oracle, you need this book. If you have already spent a few years communing with the I Ching, you really need this book to round out your understanding.
This book is well organized and both sensible and comprehensible (something that can't be said about many of the interpretations of "I Ching"). The Introduction starts with "What Is the I Ching"; showing the basic structure and definitions of lines, trigrams and hexagrams and then continues with a straightforward approach to consulting the Oracle. Each Hexagram (chapter) is introduced with perceptive "Key Questions", In the "Oracle", classic imagery is followed by lucid commentary. The chapter continues with "Image"; a kind of contemplative impression of the Hexagram, followed by "Sequence" which shows the connection to the preceding Hexagram and its place in the procession of Hexagrams. Finally comes the "Changing Lines" with a wonderfully clear discussion on the "heart" of each Line. If this seems confusing to the Beginner, it won't be when you open the book.
All this talk of "lucid" and "clear" and "insight" reminds me that the author, Hilary Barrett, has an I Ching website, "[...]", that is more than worth the time to check out. I've been an inspired follower of this website and Hilary Barrett for several years and have been eagerly awaiting this book. It's been well worth the wait.

still blown away by Hilary's work
By Amazon Customer
The price I see on Amazon makes me feel like weeping- to think this book could be so undervalued. But if you are a person with an interest in buying a guide to the oracle, you are in so much luck.

I have many books- translations, commentaries- on the I Ching but none of them really hold a candle to this one. I have had it since it came on the market..it is still and always my "go-to- guide" when I ask the oracle a question and need help with interpretation. Hilary Barret's book has an extraordinary clarity and a distillation of the oracle's wisdom that I have yet to find anywhere else- nor do I need to, actually. I never fail to come away feeling wholly answered and even with a new insight...this is no small matter because I have been a student of the I Ching for 25 years and counting.

I cannot recommend this book more highly.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Within a framework of the basic historical facts of World War I, John McCrae's famous poem is juxtaposed with paintings and a biography of the poet. Vivid descriptions of the life of a soldier and an explanation of the powerful influence the poem had on society at the time are also included. Black-and-white sketches, photographs of the subject, and memorabilia (e.g., war posters and medals) add to the visual appeal created by Wilson's artwork. The format is somewhat confusing, combining the expository text with full- and double-page paintings captioned with lines of the poem. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful book that can be used in a number of ways because of the variety of information it contains.

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-6. Focusing on the 15-line poem "In Flanders Fields," this unusual book discusses the life and wartime experiences of Canadian poet John McCrae. It looks at the conditions in the trenches and the field hospitals during the First World War, the circumstances that led to McCrae's writing the poem, the effect of its publication on morale and enlistment, and the history of "poppy day" remembrance traditions from 1919 to the present. The poem appears in full on the first page, followed by a combination of poetry, painting, and background material on the era. Full pages and double-page spreads illustrate the lines of the verse with vibrant, impressionistic paintings showing the home front, the battlefields, war-torn Ypres, and the poppies in Flanders fields yesterday and today. Interspersed are spreads featuring the history of the Great War and McCrae's role as a doctor as well as attractive pencil sketches and reproductions of period posters, postcards, photographs, and artifacts. Maps appear on the end pages. A fine introduction to the poem, the man, and the war that could serve as a focal point for discussions of Veterans Day in the U.S. or Remembrance Day in Canada. Carolyn Phelan

From Kirkus Reviews
The 16 lines John McCrae wrote following a friend's death in the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915 survived and flourished in the insanity of WW I, and in this work, continue to evince the same sturdy beauty as do the scarlet poppies blowing in Flanders fields. The poem, ``In Flanders Fields,'' has acquired so much emotional weight it could collapse any book focusing on it. Granfield (Cowboy, 1994, etc.) doesn't let that happen. Her strong, sensitive treatment, with Wilson's matching illustrations, catch the torch thrown ``from failing hands'' and wield it to illuminate the story of not only the poet-doctor, but also the war itself. Granfield deftly interweaves the lines of the poem with informative short essays on life in the trenches, accounts of McCrae's experiences in his field hospital, the burgeoning popularity of poppies as symbols of remembrance, and more. Wilson's paintings beautifully evoke place, time, and incident. The incorporation of black-and-white archival materials, such as postcards, posters, and photographs, adds yet another layer of interest, while maps on the endpapers provide further information. The book revivifies the poem, placing it so well on its feet in its world that it's difficult to think of the classroom in which the book would not be of use. That it is also a beautiful book only expands its appeal. (Picture book/nonfiction. 8+) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

excellent value
By Richard Hubbell
Yes, this poem is contained in various anthologies. However, its import and its gravity seem to be better represented in this noble offering. At one cent shy of a dollar, it is reasonably priced and can now stand alone and proud on your Kindle shelf. Millions died horribly in this increasingly forgotten war...give one final salute to their once-vital being. Buy this poem, read this poem,....and never forget.

Very sad and powerful. We visited the battlefields, and so moving could not even talk while there.
And, yes, red poppies were growing everywhere.

Beautiful book about a beautiful and meaningful poem.
By parlena covington
I have used this book as part of my Veteran's Day lesson in my high school classes for several years. The beautiful illustrations and story add a lot to an already beautiful and meaningful poem. This copy was a gift for a friend, an elementary school teacher, who also loves it.
