• Member of AMATYC (American Mathematical Association for Two-Year Colleges) for 34 years, Midwest Regional Vice President 1987–1989, chair of the editorial review committee 1991–1995, and writing team chair for Chapter 6 on Curriculum and Program Development of Beyond Crossroads.

• President of IMACC (Illinois Mathematics Association of Community Colleges) 1995–1996

• My wife and I enjoy traveling and seeing the wonders of the world, both natural and man-made.

I can say without a doubt that I was made to be in a classroom. I followed the footsteps of my father, a 35-year middle school math teaching veteran, into this challenging yet rewarding career. My college experience began as a community college student at Lakeland College in Mattoon, Illinois. From there, I received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Eastern Illinois University and a Master of Science in Mathematics from Southern Illinois University. I accepted a tenure-track faculty position at Parkland College, where I have taught developmental and college-level courses for 15 years. I had the opportunity to begin writing textbooks shortly after I started teaching at Parkland. My then department chair and mentor, James W. Hall, and I co-authored several textbooks in Beginning and Intermediate Algebra. In the fall of 2011, our department began discussing the idea of creating two tracks through our beginning and intermediate algebra courses. The idea stemmed from two issues. First, most of our beginning and intermediate algebra students were headed to either our Liberal Arts Math or our Introduction to Statistics course. Second, we wanted to beef up intermediate algebra to better prepare those students who were headed to college algebra. These were two competing ideas! Increasing the algebraic rigor of these courses seemed to “punish” students who were not heading to college algebra. With the two track system, we implemented a solution that best serves both groups of students. I have to admit that I was initially concerned that offering an alternate path through developmental mathematics for students not planning to take college algebra would lead to a lowering of standards. However, my participation in our committee investigating this idea led me to believe it was possible to offer a rigorous course that was exceedingly more appropriate for this group of students. Since there were no materials for the course, I began creating my own and was paired by McGraw Hill with Dave Sobecki. Together, we have created the material that I have been using for class testing. After a semester and a half of piloting these materials and seeing the level of enthusiasm and engagement in the mathematical conversations of my students, I am now convinced that this is an ideal course to refine and offer. As a trusted colleague told me, “this is just a long overdue idea.” Outside of the classroom and away from the computer, I am kept educated, entertained and ever-busy my wonderful wife, Nikki, and our two children, Charlotte, 6 and Jake, 5. I am an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoy playing recreational softball and golf in the summertime with colleagues and friends.

When I rented it they said I would have it ...

When I rented it they said I would have it until December 6 (the end of the school semester) then they sent me an email on Nov. 6 telling that my last day to have the book was Nov 7 and wanted me to pay more money to extend the rental. This is a scam and a rip off. They know that you will need it until the end of the semester and advertise that you will have it until the end of the semester then half way through the take it away and hit you up for more money. Don't ever rent school books from them.

This book just arrived and I expected a beat up abused text because they noted the condition as just GOOD. This book is in amazing beautiful clean almost pristine condition. Now, I want to get all my books from these people. Now...to review the text book. Weeellllll, it's a textbook. Yuck. BLAH...hard work ahead. I can't compare it to previous editions because I don't have them. It's smaller in size which I really like. Smaller generally means less to carry weight wise and less space consuming in my bag so that's good. Now there are a couple days of freedom before class starts so we will see what goes with the bold then!!

Disappointed by lack of information

This "custom edition" should have been referenced as an abridged edition. It is NOT the full reader and so is mostly useless for my son's class. I suppose I should have guessed that custom = abridged, but since there is a "Brief" edition, I assumed that this just had Tulsa CC all over it. Since this book is out of print, getting the right edition is crucial. Now my son is behind in his reading, I'm out my money, and all because the information was not explicit. The info I needed was right on the flyleaf!

I'm sure this edition is useful for people who don't really care about having the full edition, but it's not much good to me.

Very few of the readings needed for class found in the printed edition were in the kindle edition. Unless your professor explicitly states that you can use the Brief edition DO NOT BUY!

Along with the familiar circle, square, triangle, diamond, rectangle, octagon, and oval are the less frequent star, heart, and crescent. Each shape has its own verse and double-page spread packed with visual examples. There are even some extras for observant children to discover. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations are bold and clean, with ample color; however, a texturing technique occasionally results in a slightly murky appearance. At no time does this texturing obscure the text or interfere with line or shape. Those tired of bright primary colors in children's books may find the muting a nice change. Cataloging several examples for each of ten regular shapes, Greene develops in an ever-changing rhyme scheme the premise that all shapes are made from bent lines. It's an eye-opening insight for readers, but confusing when blocks are considered square, a bubble, marble, and ``curled kitten'' are included in the list of circles, and ``star'' is defined as ``the shape of a fish.'' Readers may also falter at the triangle spread, since the three blocks of text are placed so that it's hard to tell in what order they're to be read; the ``tent built just for you'' has a triangular opening, but what children will notice is the diamond- shaped side. Kaczman's picture-book debut features a set of stylized, evenly colored, very simply drawn scenes, sometimes viewed from playfully skewed angles or featuring sight gags--a police officer chowing down on a doughnut, a kilted man playing hopscotch. Still, an instructional intent hangs heavy over this, and the examples are not always on target; a better book on the topic is Dayle Ann Dodds's The Shape of Things (1994). At sunrise on July 24th, 1715, a convoy consisting of twelve ships set sail from Havana Harbor for the long voyage back to Spain. The convoy was composed of the five ships of the New Spain Flota, six ships of the Squadron of Tierra Firme, and a French ship named Grifon. After the convoy left Havana it made its way up the Bahama Channel. During the night of July 30 it was struck by a fierce hurricane that wrecked all the ships upon the coast of Florida, with the exception of the Grifon, which miraculously escaped. Over a thousand persons lost their lives. The Spaniards commenced salvage operations immediately along the beach of what is commonly known today as Florida's Treasure Coast, so named for the fabulous trove left behind on the wrecks, which continues to lure treasure hunters today. The Spanish salvage effort was quite effective, however, much remains to be found, including the dowry of the consort queen, Isabella Farnese, wife of King Philip V. Robert Marx relates this story to us with an incisive historic background, completed with contemporary details known to him through almost forty years of his own efforts to salvage the wrecks of the 1715 Plate Fleet. This edition also includes a complete reprint of the shipwreck listings found in his original Shipwrecks in Florida Waters, published in 1968 when Robert Marx took over operations for Real 8.
